re: ronan writing
since we are here for that anyway like i think (maybe i am too radical about this however-) big mama making ronan eventually more of a plot device than his own thing is ironical in overview of the whole character. this niall lynch move- but also it is so disheartening. like what is the final lesson. because i felt like ronan didn't really move past many of his traumas and didn't change much in the very end of the whole books? idk. maybe just me. i am too sensitive when the topic is ronan lynch.
okay. no you're not too sensitive. and i kept this off of twitter main because all i've seen is a lot of praise for the short story and ronan's characterization in it, and while i would never dream of denying someone their adoration of a story (and i, myself, have been known to enjoy many things my instincts say i should not) i have a great deal of contention with how ronan is being written nowadays (often at the detriment to the characters around him who now ring hollow and underwritten) and i think you nailed my first issue on the head. *bonk* brilliant.
so, i recorded a long ass rambling voice note before tumblr wouldn't let me upload it because it is twenty minutes long and that's how many issues i have with this short story and the way ronan has been handled. because ofc, and i want this disclaimer made clear i do not blame maggie for not wanting to be involved with trc fans, not really. i don't blame her for wanting to write more ronan. i do not think there's anything wrong with writing a character you enjoy, but the ronan we are presented is a very hollow ronan and one who has been contorted and pushed to further a feeble plot. and it serves my question of why did it need to be just ronan??? why is it a continued dismissal of any character besides ronan from the narrative, when her other characters are the reason we grew so attached?
warning (for any passerby) that the below is very critical of the substack short story. i am not putting this in the main tags, do not read this if you're going to get angry or are unable to engage critically. i do not dislike the story but instead am critical of its purpose and sole focus of ronan as a protagonist over the original ensemble which made the story feel as rich as it does. i am critical of the use of ronan as plot device and the erasure of other characters so this can continue to be about ronan lynch who i feel fits rather clumsily within a mature development which has not been earned.
