The new Turbo helpfully introduces herself in 1994's Marvel Comics Presents #167, in a story by Evan Skolnick, Guy Dorian and John Stokes. Wow, Rob Liefeld made a huge impression on a certain generation of artists, and not always in healthy ways. (Sometimes neutral ways--the sideways two-page spread of the sort this is from was a total Liefeldism, and it's been a long time since I've seen it used.)
"And you're about to find out why?" Is it not, like, clear from the visual context? From Secret Defenders #1, 1993, by Roy Thomas, Andre Parks and Don Hudson.
John Byrne draws (and writes) the opening scene of Sensational She-Hulk #43, 1992, in the mode of Rob Liefeld. (Then editor Renee Witterstaetter interrupts him and demands that he do it over in his own style.)
2014’s Deadpool Vs. X-Force #4 recapitulates a bit of Deadpool’s first appearance in New Mutants #98.
You don't see Rob Liefeld-on-X-Force-style "scratchy" panel borders much any more, but they turn up in 2014's Amazing X-Men #8, by Craig Kyle & Chris Yost, Ed McGuinness and Mark Farmer.
The chunky/ragged panel borders that (I believe) Rob Liefeld introduced early in his career made a brief return to vogue around the beginning of 2000, as in this panel from X-Men Unlimited #26, by Joe Pruett, Brett Booth et al. (Also: "eminent"? Sigh.)
Considering posting a list of specific Liefeld-isms that all aspiring comic artists should avoid. What say you guys?
Part of my reason for making this blog is not only to document our dear artist and his oeuvre, but to also to act as a weird source of inspiration for aspiring pros. Because, seriously, if he can get jobs, we all can. Just takes some hard work and you have to be bffs with Jim Lee.
But anyway, I've caught myself accidentally committing a Rob from time to time, we all have. Maybe I'm not the right person to compile a list, not being pro or anything, but there are a lot of hidden Liefeld-isms that seem to sneak in and ruin otherwise amazing amateur artwork.
