Rumi Russey from Belgium is a graduate of the master level study programme “Ecotechnologies”. In January 2023 student received a professional master’s degree in environmental sciences and now with Erasmus+ after-graduation scholarship for the 6 months period works at the Spanish National Research Council, one of the largest scientific institutions in Spain.
Rumi Russey’s defended his master thesis about the optimization of operational parameters for biosurfactant filtration: crucial step in waste lipid bioconversion, which is an unique research at Liepaja University. Student explains that this is a very specific topic as he has a background in biotechnology: “Biosurfactant basically is biologically produced element from chemical products produced by microorganisms. I worked on the filtration of this product, I filtered it after it was produced, I worked on how to make it a pure product.” The students findings were to narrow down which were the optimal parameters to use when filtering biosurfactants. Student said that Klaipeda University is also working on this and they already showed some interest on my research.
On the question of how was the research experience, the student said he was trying to combine what he was studying and what he was working at, because he was part-time working in a bioreactor company in Riga, Latvia; the company had a laboratory where they were working on biosurfactant projects.
About the cooperation with Liepaja University professors Rumi Russey adds: “I liked the flexibility a lot, everything was not always so strict, I could do my own thing a bit. My supervisor Lilita Ābele also helped me with corrections and made sure everything was done correctly”.
Frederick Decleck from Cameroon is a graduate of the master level study programme “Ecotechnologies”. In January 2023 student received a professional master’s degree in environmental sciences.
Frederick Decleck defended his master thesis about the public awareness of the waste management among the foreigners at Liepaja which is an unique topic. The data was collected by questionairs, the student also went to the waste recycling plant “Ķīvītes” in Grobiņa, he had an interview with the manager, which told him about the biggest problems the facility is facing.
During his research process, student has found out that the most foreigners in Liepaja don’t sort waste correctly because they don’t have the right information about sorting waste correctly, which is even worse, because when you don’t sort correctly, you contaminate the ones that are sorted correctly. In order to help to spread the information about it, student prepared the brochure about the waste management at Liepaja.
On the question of how was the research experience, the student said all went well, except the fact, that the student needs to do a lot of translation, because almost every document in Liepaja is in Latvian, but the supervisor of the student helped him with the translations.
About studies at Liepaja University Frederick Decleck says that this is an excellent environment to study, it is very quiet, a lot to see if you like sightseeing and compared to Riga it is more silent. Liepaja is a place is for the study inclined people.

Greetings from Tayyab Raza Kahlon from Pakistan ! Tayyab shares his testimony about hist studies at LiepU:
Learning and getting my degree from Liepaja University is something I consider as a big opportunity for me. The faculty staff at Liepaja University is really helpful. They are giving their all while teaching their students. The knowledge I got from my teachers was exceptional. Apart from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, at the International relations department are amazing people too. They treat you as their own. If you get confused, they are always there to guide you to the right path.
My four years in Liepaja University were full of memories, fun, sometimes worries of home works and assignments and of course, full of joy and excitement of new things and challenges. About my thesis topic, I developed the chatbot for admission queries. My research was about chatbots and how they work. I did it with my supervisor Dzintars Tomsons who is also the director of IT study program in #LiepU. He was helpful throughout my thesis and research. With his help I finished my research and defended my thesis.
Thank you, LiepU International relations department and Faculty of Science and Engineering for such a great and memorable journey!
Thank you Tayyab Raza for sharing your experiences and we are happy that you are choosing us also for your master studies!
Maria Krajewska is 1st year “European Language and Culture Studies” student at Liepaja University. She has chosen to study Latvian as her foreign language. Maria shares her impressions on studies online, how easy or difficult is to study a new language from the beginning and why she suggests this study program to other students.
My studies are going very well. I have been enjoying them very much even though they are completely different than what I imagined my first semester of university would be like. Despite that, I am still trying to make the best of it and working on my self-motivation to get everything done and to have fun. I have also found time to explore some of my interests and hobbies in the meantime to get myself away from the computer when I don’t have classes as sitting in front of a computer for a long time can get tiring. My one problem is that I cannot make friends with other students but I hope I can change this when I move to Liepaja. I really enjoy studying Latvian as a second language. I have already learned five languages in my life and Latvian is very different from all of them. It is fascinating to me how unique Latvian is compared to other European languages which I had contact with in my life in places where I have lived. I have been wanting to study Latvian for years now and I am happy that I am finally getting the chance to learn it! For me, the hardest part of learning Latvian as a foreign language is the memorizing declinations and conjugations of words. Nevertheless, I see it as an interesting challenge that I am trying to take on to the best of my abilities. All of my professors are very professional and kind to me. They are very fast to answer any inquiries I send to them which has really helped me deepen my understanding of topics that we discuss during our lectures. I am very lucky to have such professors because I can see that I am already improving my Latvian. Even if I make a mistake, they are always there to explain to me how to fix it and suggest options for improvement. I am very happy with my experience at Liepaja University. For many years now I wanted to study Latvian and searched for the right place. I know I made the right choice and cannot wait to finally come to Liepaja soon!
Why Liepaja has a potential to become a student city?
We asked this question to Arminas, exchange student from the Lithuanian Business University of Applied Sciences in Klaipeda!
When I first came to LiepU, I immediately felt that warmth. Inside the university there's plenty of space to work and study, to take a break, to have fun. There's literally everything in this university that you'll ever need, advanced technologies, modern study programs etc. Staff and teachers are always happy to help, to explain and to talk.
And the beach... The most amazing place in Liepaja, if you're tired of studying at home or university, you can always go to the beach and take a deep breath, the view is going to relax you immediately.
Liepaja has wonderful restaurants with good food serving and the prices are affordable. If you are a gym guy or girl, Liepaja can offer you variety of different sports clubs. Liepaja is the city for calm and silent studies, come here to study and leave parties behind you, you won't regret it.
LiepU is the perfect place to study, to find yourself and increase your knowledge and communication skills. Stop thinking, start doing!

Did you know that not only does the seaside promote good physical health, there's much to be said for how it improves your mental well-being too. Sea air even helps you sleep better. These are the few reasons why spring's hike has become a tradition to our office!
