Background of the story

So, I am older than the diagnosis of ADHD, In fact, when I was born in 1968, the original name was “ hyperkinetic reaction of childhood.” This diagnosis was changed to ADD and ADHD in 1987. Less than a year ago (late 2021), I was diagnosed with “borderline” ADHD because I have learned to compensate for my ADHD qualities. In fact, I would like to propose that ADHD qualities are NOT necessarily a deficit, as much as an overabundance of task-shifting ability.

In basic education (Kindergarten through grade 12 in the United States), I was an “A” student and top 5% of my class. I was a good student without even trying, like many students.  I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology with a concentration in social work with a really crappy cumulative GPA (2.74 to be exact), but a pretty good content GPA (3.28). Although I worked in the mental health field, I was in gerontology. I cared deeply about my clients, but also felt that I couldn’t make a difference with this age group. I decided to become a school psychologist, but was convinced to get an elementary education degree first. I fell in love with teaching and learning. Currently, I have a degrees in psychology and elementary education, a reading (I prefer the term literacy) specialist K-12) and English as a Second Language (ESL), a masters in education, a supervisor of curriculum, and a doctorate in curriculum. The purpose of sharing this with you is not to gloat, but to share that I am a life-long learner and I want others to be passionate about learning and teaching.

As far as career paths, they have always been in that humanistic realm. As I previously shared, I worked as an adult daycare counselor, admissions coordinator, and home mother for “mentally challenged” adult clients trying to live their best lives. Since that time, I have been a Kindergarten and first-grade teacher. literacy specialist K-5, an instructional coach K-12, educational consultant for K-12 administrators and teachers, and director of curriculum, supporting over 30 school districts and multiple charter schools and non-public schools. Currently, I teach at a college and supervise student teachers as they begin their educational path.

So needless to say, after years of counseling, I finally met my current counselor. I use the word “counselor” rather than therapist because I struggle with the way that word breaks down. Words are life to me. I love how words break down, how they connect, how they can be combined to change meaning with the drop of a hat. I guess it is not a surprise then, that my calling has always been an educator, with a focus on language, literacy, communication, and compassion. 

Although there are many stories between then and now, let’s focus on the not so long ago past and my current observations. I also want to express that this could not have happened without the help of an amazing counselor and the support of my husband and amazing children. With by husband and my children, I learned unconditional love.
