So the first part of “very short stories” was to make your very own short story using just 6 words. It can be a movie, poster or photography but you are allowed to use just six words to tell the story. So I started to think of all 3 medias and how I could use it. Thinking about a short movie I came across idea of using typography as a thinking tool, just as in BBC Sherlock Homes, or maybe using typography written on naked body “go veg or die” not really 6 words, but I still want to do it. But then I came across amazing extreme sport photographer called – Fabrice Witter.
Fabrice have done this amazing light stencil project “Enlightened Souls”, which was made after the 6.3 quake occurred in Canterbury NZ where people were involved to help their neighbors, to rebuild houses, to clean the street or to make donations. He wanted to contribute by doing something too, giving what he was able to, some of his time and skills. Giving support to his friends, to the men and women he met, who told their stories. He made fabulous light stencils across the city. I never knew what was light stencil before I saw his work, it’s a cut out stencil where you project light from dark box and take long exposure picture, so the stencil stays in the environment on the actually picture. Its not easy as you still have to cut out the stencil and then experiment with the light and exposure. For the phrase I choose “There is beach underneath the highway”. There was an artist in Latvia who was writing this phrase in Latvian, and before this project I even didn’t know that it has came from France revolution when people where taking stones from the road and underneath the stones there was sand, so it comes from 18th century. I made six stencils and a black box like a darkroom with a whole where you project light; in this case I used speedlight. Made a series of 6 photographs, taking the pictures up on the roof, seeing the beautiful sky and industrial building site. I want to continue doing the project with light stencil, and taking pictures in different locations as beach, highway and roundabout. As the location gives different meaning to the phrase it might be interesting the narrative will change.
