My mom(afro-puerto rican) always calls me light-skin, which I always feel weird about because when I look in the mirror i'm usually white. When she says this I get a litte uncomfortable because I feel like she wishes I was darker than I am and at the same time feel like I might be misunderstanding her, which makes me feel very guilty. I really love my mom and my mom's side of the family but I feel like when I tell her that "i'm obviously white" I could be rejecting them somehow. Pls help?
your mom is right to not let you forget who you are just because you look a little different to her. i mean, it's up to you whether you want to accept or reject your heritage, but in my experience that only makes you feel worse. besides, you may have other features that make your heritage known to others that your mum sees that you don’t. if it makes you feel bad to reject your mum’s side, don’t. embrace it and if people (including you) have an issue with you doing so because of how you look, ignore them. you may look white, but that doesn’t mean you are. you’re light/white-passing and dont have to reject your mum’s heritage if you don't want to, but it is your choice. being white and passing for white is not the same thing

I hear it quite often. "You're hot ... for a black girl." And to be honest, I'm almost 100 percent sure I received the same "compliment" during adole...
This is a great article for any Shawn and Angela fan and i highly suggest reading it and getting this young woman’s point of view. very enlightening and inspiring. Angela Moore inspired many women of color and this article is proof of that.
"FUCK ALL DARK SKINNED MEN!"
I think some of y'all disdain for dark-skinned men goes far beyond y'all having an issue with there colorist ways..... I think some of y'all just hate dark skin men. Point. Blank. Period. Like, when I see some of you using colorist attacks against dark skin men while you claim to be critiquing them for being colorist...... It's a joke. How you gon criticize a dark skin black dude for being colorist while referring to him as a "burnt crispy Nigga" Come. On. Now. Some of y'all have yet to really understand why dark skin men believe the ideology that is colorism. It's clearly due to there lack of power and privilege dark-skinned men. There is privileged in light skin. it's a privilege they are trying to access by getting with light skin women. But yall out here acting like dark skin men being perceived as hyper-sexual & hyper masculine over light skin men is a privilege when it's not Dark skin men being perceived as hyper sexual within a system of white supremacy means that their sex is valued, but they aren't... Being a mandingo fantasy is not a privilege LOL It also means that they are perceived as more of a threat to the sexual safety of white women And if a dark-skinned black man is perceived as being hyper masculine that means he will be perceived as being more of a physical threat But some of yall seem more critical of the dark skinned men than y'all do this system that created their colorist ass ways Y'all fight in the wrong fight Some of yall are so anti dark skinned black men that yall attempt to tear them down by building up light skinned men. White supremacy has already put dark skinned men and light skinned men against each other...... that already exists within Society so you don't need to do it LOL But I think y'all do it because it supports your narrative that dark skinned men are inherently bad. LOL Y'all run around here saying dumb shit like dark skin dudes make it hard for dark skinned women and light skinned men. Y'all create an alternative universe where, to justify your hatred of a Dark-Skinned men, y'all create a narrative that Dark Skinned women and light Skinned men are being oppressed by the evil Dark Skinned black men. LOL If a light skin men really shared an experience with colorism similar to that of Dark Skinned black women, Light Skinned black men would be out here filled with self-hatred and insecurity... they would also be out here fighting for representation and resources THEY NOT THO. It needs to be understood that Light-Skinned Black Men do not have the same experience with colorism as Dark Skinned Black Momen because this colorism continues to exist within a system of white supremacy Within the system of white supremacy all Light Skinned people have privilege Privilege over Dark Skinned people It sounds ridiculous to equate a Light Skinned man being called "soft" with a Dark-Skinned woman being called "dirt" or "Tar-Baby" Those are two different insults each one carrying a different weight with it Stop playing y'all selves Stop trying to find a shared experience where there is none In a world that perceives black people as being threatening by virtue of their mere black existence, there is privileged and Light Skinned black men being perceived as soft It's a privilege and not being looked at as too much of a threat And that is a privilege that works for Light-Skinned black men whether they wanted to or NOT Stop acting like they get treated the same as Dark Skinned black women. they don't. I see you out here trying to create the narrative that Light Skinned men are neutral within the system of colorism I see you're out here acting as if colorism does not exist amongst the community of Light-Skinned men Ya'll say that Dark-Skinned men are secretly jealous of Light Skinned men...... (Which would be understandable)...... But then y'all go want to create the narrative that Dark-Skinned men are in control of the system of colorism and how it works If Dark-Skinned men would be jealous of Light Skinned men, that would mean that the Light Skinned men are being afforded a privilege that Dark-Skinned men desire to have. ( this was something that I randomly through together please excuse any grammar mistakes LOL)
