The Weeknd Voice Type
Voice Type: Light-Lyric Tenor
Range: Bb2-B4-A5
As one of the hottest new artists of the last few years, The Weeknd’s voice type is bound to be discussed. Lets see where his light and youthful voice fits...
Tenor
The Weeknd’s voice sits within the tenor range. He has natural comfort in the upper half of the 4th octave. His lows tend to be weak and sound very uncomfortable (The Hills, Coming Down). His songs sit quite high up and despite all the strain he still manages to sustain there (In The Night, Can’t Feel My Face, Earned It). I have seen people argue that because he has not sung above C5 he cannot be a tenor. This is simply untrue, one does not have to able to hit a C5 in pop music to be considered a tenor. His high tessitura and weak lows give away his fach.
Light-Lyric
The Weeknd’s voice is distinctly light and very youthful. This boyish sound means he must be a light-lyric as light-lyric tenors are characterized by their youthful, bright and light voices.
Vocal View: I really love The Weeknd’s tone, I just wish he would work on his technique as it hinders his performances.
