The Impundulu, or Lightning Bird is a creature that appears in the myths and legends of South Africa, including the Zulu and Xhosa tribes. They are believed to be the familiars of witches, who set them on their enemies.

In some legends, the bird lays an egg beneath the ground when lightning strikes the earth. These eggs may bring bad fortune to the area and must be dug up and destroyed before this happens.

The exact appearance of the bird changes regionally, though some myths state that only women can see the bird's true form in lightning. In these myths, the Impundulu may take on a human appearance, in order to seduce these women.
