Superhero business is not as easy as Ruby Kaye thought. Ruby, from Acorn Ridge College in Maine, has suddenly become superhuman. Looking like any ordinary pair of glasses are the most technically advance black-rim glasses ever made. Engineer to enhance Ruby with extraordinary human strength and the ability of flight, she’s a teenage superhero. Ruby goes out to make the world a little bit safer and a bit more trendy on Instagram. But as Ruby quickly finds out, being a superhero is not all what’s crack-up to be. Fighting against her harshest critics, Jennifer and Caitlin, a powerful villain who throw lightning bolts from her hands and still be popular, maybe too much for her to handle. It nut-up or shut-up time for Geek-Girl as she now must stop new villain Lightning Lady.
After the fall of Neon Girl by the hands of the electrifying Lightning Lady, she’s rush to an emergency hospital for word of her prognosis. Geek-Girl slowly enters the room to find Neon Girl with lacerations and burns. With little strength, pleads Geek-Girl to take down this Lightning Lady with extreme prejudice. Not sure if she’s superhero material, Geek-Girl reluctantly agrees to take the mantle. The next morning, Ruby meets up with her friend Summer at school’s hallway. She offers to help her train by enrolling into various self-defense classes. Later that afternoon at restaurant Munchers, it soon turns into an awkward situation as Jennifer and Caitlin belittles Ruby that forces her to leave from the hamburger joint distraught with sobs and tears.
Flying over the city, she hears a lightning bolt crackle near a local bar. Its Lightning Lady who plummets through a damage rooftop of Big Hitters Bar flying towards Pit-Bull, a male vigilante . Wearing a bright white and black swirl design leotard, Lightning Lady charges up to fight against Pit bull when all of a sudden, Geek-Girl crashes through the window to meet her eye to eye. Does Geek-Girl have enough skill and strength to fight against Lightning Lady? Can she suppress the earache voices of insecurity from Jen and Caitlin? Read Geek-Girl: Ruby and Summer Get Trashed!
Sam Johnson, writer for Geek-Girl, gives an indepth look of an ordinary young college, Ruby. As she spend the next four years of study, she’s given a once in a lifetime opportunity – the possession of superpowers. Unlike those superwomen in comic books, Ruby is raw in experience and plague with self-conscious. Just from the altercation with Jennifer and Caitlin at the restaurant goes to show how Ruby so desperately needy in society. The eyeglasses that powers Geek-Girl is somewhat of a mystery thus leaves a gap in the story. Love the storyboard that transcends each scene into the next and decent dialog between the characters. The character Pit-Bull seems a little out of place as the majority of the story is filled with women and no strong male characters.
