polite society, the holdovers, bottoms, you are so not invited to my bat mitzvah

Polite Society:

never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece

It’s somewhere between not my thing and good. I love the relationship between the two sisters (love to see good sibling representation!), and it has some creative action sequences, but the plot twist was too outlandish for me

The Holdovers:

Biggest surprise of 2023 for sure. Love the humor, love the heart, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa need to be in more everything

I’m not sure whether I want to see either of those movies. In general, I’m not the biggest fan of comedies, but You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah does sound like a cute premise.

I really enjoyed it Tbh

Like I think it manages to capture that Douglas Adams vibe that's really hard to translate to screen whilst also having a really fun and compelling and intricate plot

Also written in a way that unapologetically takes a number of shots at "me, an intellectual" style detective shows (BBC Sherlock)

funny enough this is one of the things I did like about the short-lived, inconsistent bbc four series of dirk gently. (which was good on its own terms, iirc, but doesn’t hold a candle to douglas adams in any way.) it’s weird how this character from the 80s is (serendipitously, given his methods) completely accidentally a great vehicle for mocking sherlock

i never read the books but personally i loved the series it was so fun and i liked every character so

I haven’t read it in a long while but I highly recommend at least the first book. (I haven’t read the second, and the third was never finished.) it’s like adams’s other series, hitchhiker’s guide, only...denser? the effect of the book is sort of like if one of the absurdist anecdotes about the universe from h2g2 was expanded to the length of a full novel, except it’s actually five or six of those anecdotes all layered on top of each other and intertwined. and it started life as a particularly good doctor who script. if the show is at all like the book I think you’d enjoy it.

Like I'd Hella recommend watching it and I'm here to discuss it with you from like a series perspective and like a production perspective because I have a lot to say about it

7. It Was Just an Accident (dir. Jafar Panahi)

I liked a lot of things about this movie. Great tone, funny at times and almost unbearably tense at other times. Very very very good closing shot. The main thing holding it back for me is the total lack of subtlety in the dialogue. Mariam Afshari should have won Best Supporting Actress.

12. 28 Years Later (dir. Danny Boyle)

I know not everyone liked it, and I don’t think 28 Days Later needed a sequel to begin with, but it’s fine for what it is. Great child performance from Alfie Williams. It just mostly feels like a rehash of 28 Days Later. At least The Bone Temple does something different.

5, 6, 25 :)

5. An animated film

The Iron Giant will always be a favorite of mine. It’s a great film for children and adults alike. I love the Cold War setting and the way government officials are portrayed as grossly, even dangerously, incompetent, and it always makes me cry.

6. A film released before 1970

I Am Cuba, which I saw for the first time last month. It’s just a terrific film. It’s worth watching for the camera work alone, and even though it’s a series of vignettes it still forms a cohesive narrative.

25. A film that is roughly 90 minutes long

Babe, which is about 91 minutes long. That’s another childhood favorite that holds up very well in adulthood, and it also makes me cry every time.

4. What was the last book you added to your TBR?

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. I actually bought the book a few years ago but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

6. Which book was the last one you really, really loved?

The Road Back by Erich Maria Remarque, which I finished reading in January. Remarque is just such a phenomenal writer, and I like that this book ends on a fairly hopeful note.

25. If you could be a character from a book for just one day who would you be and why? (Bonus: Any specific day in the story?)

I think I would want to be a hobbit. I wouldn't need to be one of the main characters; I'd be happy just being some random hobbit from the Shire. And if I could pick a specific day, it would be Bilbo's 111th birthday/Frodo's 33rd birthday so that I could be in the Shire during a time of peace.
