"FCK RWE / Hambi (Forest) Stays!"
RWE is an energy company which operates the massive Hambach brown coal mine in Germany, which is planned to soon devour what is left of the adjacent forest.
For the past 6 years, environmental activists have resisted the destruction of the forest through a variety of tactics, including lawsuits, demonstrations and mass civil disobedience actions at the mine by the Ende Gelaende climate campaign, alongside the consistent construction of barricades, tripods and tree-houses in the forest and late night sabotage actions against mine site machinery.
For more information about the urgent situation in the Forest check out: https://enoughisenough14.org/tag/hambacher-forest/ & https://hambachforest.org/
Zucker im Tank
During the last years the climate justice movement got more and more diverse: With climate camps, tree occupations, blockades of railways and coal diggers, demonstrations and many other forms of action we show again and again that climate protection is made by hand. This summer we want to use this diversity to effectively disturb the processes in lignite* power generation.
Zucker im Tank (meaning sugar in the fuel tank) will support small group actions before and during the action days in the lignite mining areas of Rhineland from 24th to 29th of august 2017.
Climate change is most strongly affecting those that have produced least of it. Therefore, the struggle for climate for us also is a feminist, antiracist, anti-state and anti capitalist struggle, a class struggle and a struggle against animal exploitation and militarism. Or short: a fight against authority in general.
Affinity group actions are self-determined and therefore highly unpredictable. If everyone respects their needs and limits during preparation, realization and final reflection, your action strengthens both the movement and your group.
Different thematic priorities and different actions are encouraged to coexist and positively relate to each other. It is therefore necessary to show critical solidarity and respect among each other. No action should make another action impossible.
We want to support you in the preparation of small group actions. Therefore, together with others we offer workshops in various cities before the action days. Yout can find locations and dates under “Events”. You are welcome to ask us for a workshop in your city.
*Lignite is a form of coal that produces more CO2 and other contaminant’s emissions when it is burnt than any other fossil fuel. Germany is one of the worlds biggers lignite producers.

The Court of Justice of the European Union ordered Poland to immediately stop lignite mining in the Turów mine on Friday, leading to PiS party representatives criticising the ruling.
On Monday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that the Polish government “will certainly not only enter into negotiations with the Czech side, but also present new arguments to the Court of Justice of the European Union.”
Morawiecki stated that “the CJEU’s decision is dangerous both from the point of view of potential environmental threats, because it may even threaten an environmental catastrophe, as well as for Poland’s energy security and for ensuring work for 5,000 people working there.”
He stressed that “our Czech and sometimes German neighbours are disturbed by this mine”, and “on the other side of the border in the Czech Republic and also on the German side, there are mines and power plants that function, are doing well and do not bother anyone”.
The head of government announced that during the European Council summit that began on Monday, he will talk to Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš on the topic.
Czech Environment Minister Richard Brabec said on Monday he regrets that Poland had not taken the Czech demands seriously in the past and that the case had to reach the EU Court of Justice.

Naturally, PiS will ignore the ruling because EU laws don’t apply to Poland if the government doesn’t wish it.

The lignite mining market consists of sales of lignite by entities (organizations, sole traders and partnerships) that mine bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite coal by underground mining, strip mining, culm bank mining, and other surface mining techniques. The lignite mining industry also develops lignite mine sites and improves lignite, including cleaning, washing, screening, and sizing of lignite. Lignite is typically used in pulverized coal or cyclone-fired electric production power plants.

The Hambach open-pit mine, widely covered in the news in recent weeks, supplies a significant portion of the coal that is burned in the Niederaussem and Neurath power plants in Germany’s lignite mining area of North Rhine-Westphalia. Its harmful effects on the climate and local environment are well known. Recent analysis by NewClimate Institute has estimated the direct impacts on human health of burning the coal to generate electricity. The pollutants produced by the burning of Hambach coal alone contribute to roughly 320 premature deaths per year, caused for example by heart disease or stroke.
