ok all of us jumping on c!Wilbur immediately is kinda what he was afraid of. one slip up and he’s the villain again, he’s the enemy again, he’s the bad guy again. I’m not saying what he did was okay! I’m just saying that we shouldn’t be so quick to turn revivedbur into vilbur.

so i’ve been thinking about the sparrow speech from hamlet, just two specific parts.

“not a whit, we defy augury. there’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. if it be now, tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come. the readiness is all”

i initially thought the very last line was just acceptance, but upon rereading and re-examining, it appears to be more fatalistic. hamlet is giving up on order and giving in to chaos. so was wilbur.

as he pressed the button, he said

“it was never meant to be”

it is also him giving in to chaos, things that he has been trying so hard to preserve even through his descent into madness. everything he said prior, about how what he built the nation for was now gone– they were all simply excuses. he built it for the people, people he now has, people who are happy to see him back in power, in his own nation. echoing eret’s line just allowed him to seal his own fate, alongside all his friends, family and enemies. even though he had already wanted to “become the bad guy” but he never pushed the button before, always inching toward the cliff, never stepping off. until then. “the readiness is all.”

the sparrow itself is also an interesting symbol. i initially thought it was tommy, purely by virtue of both his canonical brothers betraying him at the same time, and wilbur placing tubbo in charge once tommy rejected the presidency. while i don’t think it’s wrong, i also believe that the sparrow can be connected to something larger, which inherently impacts almost ever person on the server. l’manburg.

the sparrow being l’manburg makes more sense because of what the two former presidents said, shortly before dying.

schlatt: “if i die, this country goes down with me.”

wilbur: “if i can’t have it, no one can.”

they both want to take l’manburg down with them, it doesn’t matter who it hurts or how they get it.

so what’s the logical solution here? how do you keep a country crumbling down without having to physically be alive, to keep battering down the walls without an actual, physical battering ram? an ineffective system of government. the political climate is already atrocious, why not make it worse?

ergo, wilbur puts children in charge. not even his own son, who he built the nation for, who he’s left alone all this time. he gives it to tommy, who returns it to him, and he gives it to tubbo. tubbo, true to character, puts tommy as his vice president. they aren’t fit to lead a nation, they should be allowed to heal from war, and yet, that is destroyed in the crossfire of grown men who should know better.

l’manburg pretty much crumbled to smithereens after that. tommy and ranboo griefed george’s house, which led to tommy’s subsequent exiling, dream made a big deal of it and put up walls until tommy was kicked out. they’re children, forcibly grown up almost exclusively during wartimes. the two have also been manipulated and emotionally abused during the pogtopia years, tommy by wilbur and tubbo by schlatt. dream took advantage of that and separated them, further tearing away at the seams of an already fragile, healing l’manburg.

note for december 16th: everything is in shambles, the ideals of what l’manburg was supposed be and represent pretty much died alongside wilbur. everything is ridden with paranoia and people are making power plays (most notably, big q). l’manburg was the sparrow because it meant nothing to the people that came after wilbur and schlatt. the sparrow is falling.

He just makes me feel like absolute shit sometimes like he just reminds me of every bad thing in the world and what a shitty person i am, like i don’t already know that, like i don’t fucking hate myself for it every single day and i was getting better and then he comes along and he’s so insightful and self-aware but at the same time he can be such a dick sometimes and he doesn’t even see it. Fuck it, i won’t tell him any more personal stuff cause last time i said something real but depressing he just wanted to run away and not talk to me forever.
