Like-A-Hug Vest Gives You A Cuddle With Every Facebook 'Like'
Some might think that a Facebook ‘like’ is kind of the same as a high-five. Others might view it as a pat on the back, a wink, a nod of approval. MIT students interpreted the social media ‘like’ as a hug, and designed a wearable social media vest that translates every virtual Facebook ‘like’ into a warm hug. A real one!
Developed by Melissa Kit Chow in collaboration with Andy Payne and Phil Seaton, the Like-a-Hug vest looks like any ordinary piece of winter clothing, except when you receive a ‘like,’ this vest inflates, ‘thereby allowing us to feel the warmth, encouragement, support, or love that we feel when we receive hugs.’
Chow explains why they came up with such an idea: ‘We came up with the concept over a casual conversation about long-distance relationships and the limitations of video chat interfaces like Skype. The concept of telepresence arose, and we toyed with the idea of receiving hugs via wireless technology.’
