I think KCD did something really good with Istvan. Like. If Henry goes and insults him, like, "you are Old and Fat!" And like. Objectively true but also no baring on anything. Certainly doesn't make this ridiculously charming man undesirable. Certainly this man has found love. Certainly this man has power and influence. Henry feels very much like an immature jerk waving a stick that had little to do with nothing. The reasons to hate Istvan are because of what he's done, and because of how he thinks. And Henry can act and think just the same. Just. idk. There's something about the way the game is constructed that personalizes evil in a person as something disconnected from their other traits about them. And I love that.

I profoundly agree with this. Their treatment of the villains in the game is just overwhelmingly fantastic. They're all nuanced, three dimensional characters where we can acknowledge that they've done horrible, awful things all while recognizing that they're human and driven by emotions and experiences. Their actions might be evil, but at the end of the day Henry can see himself in any of them.

And I kind of think that's important to consider. Because Henry ostensibly comes out of Rattay with a very black and white view of the world. Some people are good, some are evil. (As an aside here, I think his relationship with Hans was the first to force him to confront the impossibility of sustaining this viewpoint.) This is especially true if we consider that Henry would view the world through a Catholic lens, where you can only fall from grace, you cannot rise back up to meet it.

It's why him meeting the Cumans and drinking with them feels so impactful. These people did something evil, but they were obeying the orders of others in exchange for money. And as it turns out, they had tremendously human experiences themselves, because of course they did! Drinking with them is unbelievably fun. Then there's Toth, who also turns out to be Just A Man. The whole game long, Henry is forced to contend with the fact that he can't paint in broad strokes when it comes to morality or revenge, let alone good or evil. It's just not that simple.

And that presents him with a different problem: if he deems these people evil for their actions and he acts just as they do, what makes him any different? That's where those dreams come from, I think. Because this black/white, good/evil dichotomy of his isn't sustainable. It keeps being challenged, over and over, that even people who do evil things aren't like... demons. They're still people. They still love and grieve and feel. It's not surprising that he struggles with that.
