He hadn’t relaxed since he left Quarters Branch. his shoulders taut and stiff. He hadn’t stopped pacing either. His mind wouldn’t stop. He kept thinking, he’d suspected before, hadn’t he? Always been a little on the paranoid side. It was living a double life that did it. Alternating between Alex and Alistair.
Of course, when he’d left Alex and the life he’d built as Alex behind, he’d been overly paranoid. He managed to get past it, move on and stop thinking everyone was out to get him. But now, seeing Danny as Q, Alex panicked.
Had Danny been a spy the whole time? Had his assumptions all those years ago been true. He had to compose himself, to draw his emotions in line, but the tell tale prickle of tears threaten to burst free and he’s embarrassed. He won’t let it get the better of him. Not now. (It already has.)
“Did you know?” The question was hurried, impatient as he stared at the elder Holmes. He raised a hand, carding through his brunet locks in an out of character gesture. “Did you know?” He was sure Mycroft knew what he was asking. His boss was too smart to be that ignorant.
“I assume that you are talking about Daniel.”
Mycroft didn’t look up from his work; he didn’t need to. What else would Alistair be talking about? He’d been sent to Q-Branch while Mycroft had believed Q to be away, but he’d come back looking like he’d seen a ghost - the balance of probability was that he had seen a ghost. Well, of sorts, anyway.
Despite his calm exterior, inside Mycroft was quickly attempting to come up with a solution to this issue. This was not good. He hadn’t planned to reintroduce the two for at least another month, so this disturbed his plans quite a bit.
After a moment, he looked up to carefully observe Alistair. Hm. He looked like he could be taking it worse, Mycroft supposed. Still, nobody could take this kind of thing without any effects, could they?
Finally, the file in his hands was placed to one side. “You have questions,” Mycroft stated - seeing no need to speak as if he were asking a question. “I expect he will ask similar ones when he next sees me too.”
