I realized a few things about this week’s episode of the Persona 5 anime
As many of you know, today at 2:00 A.M. JST / 1:00 P.M. EDT, the 26th and final episode of Persona 5 The Animation aired on Japanese TV as well as Crunchyroll and Hulu. Having watched Twitch streams of the game (and now I’m dying to play it in person), I know how the plot goes. Yet, this finale was so shocking to watch. I can’t believe this was the plot twist A-1 promised. At the same time, an OVA (or it could be a miniseries) was announced, and it will to pick up on the story from this point.
Based on these facts, I can make the following assumptions about the intentions of the producers and the future of the anime franchise. (Continued after break due to spoilers)
Why did the anime have to end with Ren getting ruthlessly murdered by Goro? And this was apparently what would be THE BAD ENDING! Probably Atlus wanted it to go this way just so they can get those who’ve only watched the anime and never played P5 to get a copy of the game and start playing it. Why would they end it at such a cliffhanger anyway? I wouldn’t be surprised if Atlus announced sales of P5 went up after this episode aired.
Will this be an OVA or an actual mini-series? Cause the next stages, Shido’s Palace and eventually Mementos itself will take a while. Maybe two hours? (Also, I wish to note that the last regular ending of P5A included episodes numbers 27 and 28. A second season perhaps?)
I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to air the special near the holiday season, or even on Christmas Eve. After all, you know what happens in the game on Christmas Eve, right? Praise be to Satanael!
Now until the OVA does finally come out, expect much ranting about the anime on social media, here on Tumblr, and probably tonight’s Twitch streams of P5.
“Hey Noa... Each day you’re looking better. I think we’ll be able to have you entirely finished soon. I had to order some parts from over seas but they should be in any day now and then I can start working on the finishing touches. I know it won’t be a real body like you wanted but I’m going to do everything I can to give you best body Kaiba Corporation can offer. It’ll be way better than where you are now.”
“I know if Nii-sama found out about you before we were ready he’d have you destroyed, and lecture me about what happened in the past. But don’t worry he won’t find you! I promise i’ll keep you safe. You don’t have to be scared. I’ll make sure you get another chance. Seto will see... I’ll make him, no matter what. And then we can live together, the three of us... as brothers. Nii-sama will get to see you for who you are and not the person Gozaburo turned you into. I think.. Once Seto realizes that you truly are good it’ll be ok. He’ll just need time so don’t hold anything against him, ok?”
“I know I can get him to listen to reason. I’m his little brother and he trusts me. He left Kaiba Corporation to me after all. He trusted me to watch over the company when he left.. and to take care of it until he was well. I’ve been working so hard... I’ve been working so hard on making you perfect, he’ll see that I’m not just a little kid anymore. I’m just as fit to doing more around here and not just when its a last resort. When he sees what I made... I hope I can make him proud of me.”
