I’s been passed out for da past few hours, m’last shift KILLED my back.

If it's ok, some headcannons of the bilingual mercs struggling with their English sometimes?

Pyro: no one can hardly understand them anyway so most of the team doesn’t even realize they speak Spanish.  but they’re not safe from forgetting what certain words are and will often stand there and stare at something in confusion until it either comes back to them or someone walks over and says what it is.  it works every time too

Heavy: he’ll just ask someone what something is and admit he can’t remember.  though him trying to describe it is what trips him up and so he instead will just bring it to someone and ask, or take someone to it and ask.  if he tries to describe it, he’s almost sure to start forgetting those words as well and then he’s just flustered and trying to translate himself and it’s so much easier to just show someone the thing he’s talking about

Medic: arguably forgets English the most out of everyone.  if he’s talking about something, he’ll call it what it is in German and then get frustrated when the other person doesn’t understand.  he usually forgets English the most when he’s writing.  swapping words out for German only to later use the English word anyway, writing sentences how they’d be formatted if written in German, etc

Spy: he might not even speak French if he’s tired enough, and then it’s just a gamble if someone on the team can understand him.  if he’s trying to refer to something and can’t remember what it’s called, he’ll sit and visibly think REALLY hard before figuring out what the literal English translation would be and say that as if it’s a question because he’s not even sure himself.  it usually doesn’t help much

I kept it to those four because while I do headcanon pretty much all of them (except Soldier) as knowing more than one language to some degree, those are the only ones who English is their second language

Do you have any platonic Engine and Pyro hc’s? I personally like to think that Pyro is closest to Engie out of all the mercy because of his calming voice and overall demeanor.

Engineer is the one Pyro is closest to on the whole base despite the fact they hang around Scout the most

they grew close to each other after Pyro started hanging around Engineer’s machines during work hours to protect them

Engineer was one of the first ones to come around to understanding what Pyro was saying under the mask, and then started leaning ASL when they noticed Pyro was using it to help communicate

they both love spicy foods, those two and Sniper.  but Pyro and Engie both will swap recipes regularly

Pyro loves hanging out with Engie while he’s down in his workshop.  they also will often take their flamethrowers down to get his opinion on things they could do to make them better

Engineer is also the only one who found out Pyro knows Spanish and will sometimes speak to them in it when it’s just the two of them.  Pyro tries their best to correct him if he gets something wrong but that’s hard to do under a gasmask

Pyro was the one who gifted Engineer the Teddy Roosebelt bear.  it was a bear they’d found and made the accessories for

Engie is the one usually assigned to “babysit” Pyro when the team goes places.  they use the term in a joking yet affectionate way since he’s often seen as the “dad” of the group

Pyro is the only one on the team Engie trusts to leave alone with his buildings during battle.  and Pyro takes that job very seriously

Engineer in return is very protective over Pyro’s things.  whether it be their weapons or anything, if he senses someone is getting too rough around anything of Pyro’s, there will be hell to pay

Engie is the one Pyro goes to when they’re feeling down because he always knows what to say.  even if it’s nothing more than talking about his newest project to take their mind off things

Pyro hugs him, a lot.  Engineer doesn’t mind it one bit

might have been asked before (or not), but i really want to know your perception on Pyro's identity. gender, orientation and/or personality wise! it's a character that genuinely intrigues me as a rather fresh tf2 fan, and i really enjoy your envision of the mercs so far, so yeah! :) —🎻

to start

Gender: I actually do think Pyro is a man like the others.  I just don’t use he/him as pronouns and instead use they/them because the whole point of it is no one is supposed to know.  and it leaves open the possibility Pyro is actually just a sentient rubber suit which is my personal favorite theory

Orientation: asexual.  I’m not against Pyro being portrayed in non-sfw scenarios tbh, I just personally see them as being too innocent for it.  and as far as romantic goes, I don’t think Pyro would really have a preference and I’ve just never settled on a label for them.  Pyro would go for whoever makes them happy, that’s their romantic attraction

now that that part is out of the way, here we go with general headcanon stuff!

as I’ve said before, I see Pyro as being able to speak Spanish (it’s just no one can understand them) and also knows ASL

I like to think they’re Mexican (though I’ll sometimes say Hispanic, but more often than not I lean more towards them being Mexican.  I just can’t ever truly settle on one answer)

they have a gap between their front teeth

they’re closest to Engineer and Scout on the team.  it’s not they aren’t friends with anyone else, everyone on the team is Pyro’s best friend, those are just the two they hang around the most

Scout is the one Pyro hangs around with the most during off hours, and Engie is the one they hang out with the most during work

they love making fireworks with Demoman, the team’s never needed to buy them for any holiday because those two will always have an arsenal at the ready

Pyro is a VERY huggy person, some of the team took longer to get used to it than others but it’s something everyone just accepts

they’re very childish in mannerisms and interests but is still very quick to anger if anyone messes with them.  just because they act that way doesn’t mean they’re not still a grown person and expects to be respected as such just like everyone else on the team

Miss Pauling is the only person allowed to talk to them the way that’s been shown in her voicelines to them, they get very angry if anyone else does.  not because they see it as someone talking down to them or treating them like a child, but because that’s how she’s talked to them for the longest time so they just see it as their thing and no one else is allowed to join in

Pyro isn’t scared of water, they’re just not a strong swimmer and don’t like being in large bodies of water.  they actually really love the sounds of running water, it’s soothing

they were involved in an accident at some point in their life and have burn scars all over a good portion of their body, pretty much from the shoulders up is the only part not scarred.  most people would think they’d have trauma towards fire after that, but instead it left them with a massive amount of respect for it and is what really solidified their love for it

“Mmph?”

Spy looked up from the paperwork on his desk at Pyro.  They were dressed for bed and it was only then he looked at the clock and realized how late it was, and how tired he was.

“I apologize, I’d lost track of time.”  He stretched out, groaning softly and smiling to himself as Pyro came closer to show him what they were hiding behind their back.  A book, a bedtime story.  “Cher, I don’t have time tonight.  I’m sorry, but..”  He trailed off, looking at Pyro.  He couldn’t see their face behind the mask but it was the body language.  The wilt in their shoulders, the book slightly lowered, the way their gaze had turned ever so gently to the floor.

He sighed, dammit he was weak.  “Oh.. fine, fine.  Alright.. but I can’t stay.  I have things I need to do.”  Spy got up, reluctantly.  He had paperwork to finish, things for the higher ups that they expected sooner than yesterday by the way they were badgering him.

Spy could feel the pressure weigh on him as he followed Pyro to their bedroom, the angry eyes of people who weren’t there judging him for leaving his work even for a moment.  They expected so much of him as a Spy.  When he wasn’t doing Spy things, it was paperwork.  Documenting.  Looking things over.  Things that were very much not in his job description but he was expected to do because they knew things about him.

He was blackmailed to do grunt work.

Now that he was thinking about it, maybe a break from this was just what he needed.  After all, they weren’t willing to do it themselves, right?  So if they were relying on him, then they would just have to wait.  He had more important things to do, like getting his partner to bed.

Pyro made room on their bed, moving their plushies around for both of them to get settled comfortably.  They patted the spot next to them and looked at Spy expectantly.

“I appreciate it, but I cannot.  I’ll pull up a chair but-”

“Mmmmmph!”  Pyro pointed harder at the spot next to them, a bit more forcefully this time.

Spy relented, he couldn’t say no.  He got on the bed after toeing off his shoes, getting himself settled amongst the pillows and plushies.  He even allowed Pyro to tug a blanket up on them both.  “You do realize I have work, right?  I can’t stay once you fall asleep.”  He smirked, merely teasing.

Pyro gave him a light shove in response before passing the book over and snuggling up into his side.

Spy smiled, rolling his eyes playfully as he let out a soft chuckle.  “You are lucky I adore you.  So.. we’re leaving the mask on tonight, I see?”

A pause, then Pyro nodded.

That was fair, he didn’t always take his off either.  He understood the need to have something to hide behind.  Either way, Spy took the book and flipped it open to start reading.

It’d become an almost-nightly routine, it had started when Pyro couldn’t sleep after a nightmare of sorts.  The only story Spy knew at the time was in French, but the language didn’t matter.  All they’d needed was a soft voice to focus on while their mind settled.  His voice kept the other thoughts out that would keep them up.  They weren’t always bad thoughts, but thinking about anything while trying to fall asleep wasn’t exactly helpful.

Spy provided something Pyro could focus on, but not really.  It wasn’t the words that mattered, or the story, it was having a warm body and a warmer voice to keep their mind clear enough so they could fall asleep.

Spy yawned loudly in the middle of a sentence, and then waited.  Silence.  They were asleep.  He put the book down on the nightstand and went to shift away when Pyro gripped tighter.  Maybe not quite all the way there, then.  He waited again, and this time he was certain they had to be asleep.

But when he shifted again, Pyro only held tight.  “Merde.”  Spy thought about the papers sitting on his desk.  As exhausted and comfortable as he was, he knew he had to go back to them.  The problem was if he moved too much, Pyro would just wake up and the whole reason he came in here would be for naught.

He looked at them, then at his watch.  Spy contemplated his options, before letting out a soft sigh.  Just a few minutes, he could spare that.  He could rest his eyes, after all he’d been doing a lot of reading even before Pyro had come to him.  No more than that.

Spy adjusted himself on the bed, laying his head back and shutting his eyes, one hand gently caressing Pyro’s back.  Just a few minutes.

Spy felt himself settle more into his position, head lolling off to the side.  Just a few minutes..

Spy drifted off to sleep in those few minutes.  The higher ups would just have to be mad.

Sniper doesn’t really have a sweet tooth but the man will go nuts over anything with blueberries in it, he won’t turn down other sweets if they’re offered to him bc he’s polite but he won’t take more than a taste and then pass the rest of it off to someone else to finish, but if someone bakes anything with blueberries in it they know to watch it like a hawk to make sure he doesn’t inhale it

Spy, Scout, and Pyro are the ones with the biggest sweet tooth on the base, Scout it’s obvious with his love for anything sweet, Spy is a bit more reserved about it unless it’s Nutella, and Pyro always has a giant stash of candy somewhere

those three are the ones Sniper will usually hand off the rest of his dessert to after he’s had a bite, just whoever he happens to be closest to

Spy thought it was disgusting for the longest time to eat after him and would always hand it off to one of the others.. until Sniper looked him dead in the eye and reminded him it’s no different than when they have their tongues in each other’s mouths

he stopped complaining after that and learned to just enjoyed his extra dessert

what would a demoman and pyro friendship be like?

absolutely chaotic duo once they start scheming things

they love building fireworks together, and will do so for every occasion they can get away with it.  4th of July?  New Years?  Scout’s birthday?  city hall collapsed in town and now Teufort is scrambling trying to figure out what to do because they’re none too bright and think this just means there’s no government anymore?

okay wait, maybe not that last one, guys

Pyro is always the one who prepares everything for Demoman’s birthday every year, it’s not that the others forget it’s just Demo doesn’t always throw a huge fuss over it himself

Pyro is like Demo’s personal hype-person, anything he wants to do that he gets excited for they’ll cheer him on even if it’s the craziest idea ever

Demo fixes a lot of Pyro’s weapons for them when they get damaged, which may sometimes consist of “let’s put some duct tape on it, that’ll patch it right up!” and Engie is rolling at the thought

Demo usually takes Pyro with him and Soldier when they go into town for their shopping runs and even though they have a shopping list, none of it will be brought back and someone else will have to go out again

Pyro loves hearing about the creatures in Demo’s books and will spend hours with him as he tells them tales of these mythical beasts and how he’s totally battled one at some point in his life, no one else believes him but Pyro does and he’s happy with his attentive audience of one - not that anyone else stops listening of course, but it’s nice to know someone appreciates his adventures!

when Demoman is gone for things, Pyro likes to go into his room and take some of the books to draw Demo fighting the creatures he’s talked about and leave them in the pages for him, every single one of them goes into their own book and is stored in a very safe place so nothing happens to them

Demo is the only one on base that will admit he enjoys watching weekend cartoons with Pyro, Scout does but he won’t admit it despite him joining them every morning without fail

Demo is one of the few who can almost understand Pyro’s muffles, he tends to understand them more when he’s more sober ironically enough

Pyro really enjoys helping Demo make his bombs, they’re not allowed to handle the chemistry part of it but they’re allowed to help put them together, this is usually the time Demo will go off on his stories about fighting monsters if they’re not sitting around a campfire with the others

and that's my Sniper OC Mike and his ferret Sydney!  I sometimes get a bit emotional when I look at art of those two together and that one is my most favorite piece, Sydney was based on my first ferret Monty.  I miss that lil guy a LOT

OC rambling under cut I’m sorry

and this one is more for my OC Mike, but he’s the only one on his team who from day 1 could completely understand their Pyro and he just sits and translates for everyone.  they’re best buds

he’ll jokingly “mistranslate” at times but it’s more of an inside joke between the two of them

Pyro asking someone to come help them with something, and Mike’s just “they said get your fuckin’ arse over here”, and Pyro looking up at him like “you know that is not how I said it”, and Mike will look at them and then back at the person and be like “oh I’m sorry, please get your fuckin’ arse over here”
