Prompt #21: Family Traditions

A soft blanket of snow had fallen, in reality someone had conjured up some snow for the little ones to play in earlier that day. It seemed to be tradition for a few people to gather, in the suns leading up to Starlight, to make creatures out of snow or throw balls of it at each other. Kai loved to watch, the tip of her tail wiggled back and forth as she watched the other kids zoom around dodging and sliding.

She bounced slightly where she sat, mocked movements as if she was in the fight too. A soft sigh muttered behind her as the boat rocked up in down. “Kai.. still please.” They had been on the water most of the morning. This time of year always proved a bit more difficult in terms of the catches. Most fish had swam father south but her mother had picked more northern ones knowing people would follow the seasonal ones.

Big hearty ones, ones that could handle the winter. They weren’t always the most sought after ones, but they had lots of meat and were great for preparing for the moons ahead. The small girl pouted a little as she forced herself to calm her feet from rocking. Oceans darted back and forth as she watched them play, her tail slowly started smacking the side of the boat. “Kaii..” the small ears dipped and the tail stopped.

Legs up and over one by one and the girl repositioned herself to sit with her back turned to the shore. Her ears flicked back and forth as it captured the small giggles and noises from behind her. She watched her mom reel in and recast the line back out. “Mum.. why do we not celebrate Starlight like them do?”

A strained sighed was followed by a shake of the woman’s head. “Kai.. Ye’know why, we keep’it simple. Family.” The little girl slowly nodded “Aye!” her ears perked up and wiggled “Dad n’ mum n’ me.” She kicked her feet slightly as the line tugged. The woman smiled as she started to pull in the small fish that would be the special treat of their holiday.
