The arcade floats in the ocean contained between the Material Plane — domain of the palpable and concrete, dependent on Lavoisier's laws, where ideas are subjugated to thoughts, and the fantastical can only inhabit the unconscious — and the Underworld — domain of the dead, of the fictitious and oblivion. This ocean is called the Sub-Material Sea, and it shares characteristics with its two neighboring planes, thus giving the inhabitants of the Underworld physical bodies and sensations, and can be accessed by inhabitants of the physical plane through unconsciousness. The Arcade, in the midst of the great red sea, is characterized as a space between our concepts of life and death, carrying characteristics of both without being either.
