So my favourite dragon mount, the one that I use most often...I'm giving it to the Rathalos. I love the sounds it makes and it's big stomping steps and...I mean c'mon it's the Rathalos it's just badass lol

But I do have to give a shout-out to one other dragon mount: Ehll Tou. Lore-wise, she and Drakyr are close. Drakyr has a lot of crafting and gathering expertise to pass along and bond over, especially cooking. So here they are crafting and gathering in the Firmament/Diadem.

Have you noticed your style change over time?

We haven't really noticed that, no -- we're aware our older fics don't read quite the same as our more recent ones, but we don't tend to notice the changes happening in real time and would struggle to pinpoint exactly what changed.

Part of that is plurality-related. We don't all write the same to begin with -- actually part of our editing process now, especially for longer projects, consists of getting as many of us rereading the text as possible (separately over a period of time and/or together at the same time), so we can smooth out differences where needed or (more rarely) exaggerate them when warranted (e.g. for added character flavour in subjective narration). In the past we didn't go through that Collaborative Smoothening step, and we did a lot less editing to begin with (we same-day wrote-and-published a lot), so many of our older works are more clearly One Guy's Writing. We can usually tell who based on the way they're written, but this isn't style evolution so much as like... us writing differently at baseline.

Part of that is that we have two types of approach to writing: either we write so rarely that too much time passes in-between for us to remember our previous writings clearly, or we write so often that any overall changes are too gradual for us to notice. Nowadays it's more the latter -- with the MelloNears, we've been writing/editing at least a few words every single day since November 1st, in mostly the same two AUs/series, so we're not really seeing the style evolution that is probably taking place because we're standing too close to see the big picture.

We're subconsciously acquiring a lot of Robert Jordan's writing mannerisms and it's always fun spotting the similarities.#Sometimes we'll read a thing he wrote like a turn of phrase or the way he arranged a sentence or some such #and be surprised because we remember having put that same thing almost verbatim in a fic and it wasn't even imitated on purpose.#There's also the one (1) thing I *know* we picked up from Jonny Sims a couple years back: the everpresent “Still (comma)” lol.#If we're still doing that one without even thinking about it a few years down the line I think it'll be with us for life #fortunately or unfortunately.#Thank you for the ask!! This was actually kind of a tricky one to answer for Ariane! A lot of her story is about grief... but because of that, grief is an old friend. She lost her first home when she was 12, and friends with it; she lost her second home when she was 22, and her family with it. And yeah, there have been times in her life where grief threatened to destroy her, but it hasn't. I think Ariane's strength there lies in the fact that she doesn't smother her grief or try not to feel it; she screams and sobs and rends her garments, but then she keeps going.

I think what she actually deals with a lot worse is the far more mundane feelings of loneliness, isolation, and rejection (real or perceived). As a socially awkward nerd who always struggled with making friends, Ariane has always leaned heavily on others making overtures of friendship. The problem with that is you can't really expect people to know you want to be friends, or to know what your needs are as a friend, if you don't communicated those things in any way.

Ariane goes through a long period of feeling like an outsider in the Scions, feeling like they don't really see her as one of them, feeling like her talents are more important than who she is as a person... and while there are certainly some things they do and say that contribute to that, there's also a failure on her part to open up to them, to let herself be more than the Warrior of Light in their presence. Her sense of loneliness and isolation is in part self-reinforcing, and at a certain point she has to crawl out from under her own self-pity and learn that if you reach out a hand, you might find one reaching back.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

man, the fun thing about getting into Assassin's Creed is you learn a lot of shit while you're doing research for fic and roleplay just so you can get the voices and the setting right. for example: Edward Kenway (and Connor, and Haytham, and Shay Cormac, and Arno Dorian) would not know what a dinosaur is! because people only started to recognize dinosaurs as something unique from animals in 1817. like yeah, people knew ancient animals were a thing before then, but dinosaurs weren't classified as dinosaurs back in their day.

another thing: Jacob Frye would almost certainly have met and been friends with Boulton and Park, the crossdressers who were arrested for, essentially, crossdressing. (there were charges of sodomy brought against them but the whole thing has a frisson of "these MEN are wearing DRESSES" which is more than a little familiar, in this day and age. we don't actually know how Boulton and Park, aka Fanny and Stella, identified, gender identity-wise, but at the very least they were visibly queer.) being a bisexual gang leader in the Victorian era, he'd be more than sympathetic to their plight, and in the ACverse when they got arrested almost certainly sought to ensure they got off okay.

and this isn't AssCreed but Hamilton, but I have always loved that Baron von Steuben, the guy who whipped the Revolutionary Army into shape, historically threw pantsless flaming shots parties at Valley Forge. I'm not kidding. he actually did that. also he was almost certainly gay, and, this I found out doing research for AssCreed, he dressed his men in red coats on his first arrival to American shores because he wanted to come in style.
