GONE FISHIN
The selkie came from hunters.
Lilija inherited her mother’s teeth and her father’s shrewd nature—a taste for blood and the cunning to acquire it.
“A gun is not a magic wand you can wave to make a problem go away,” he once said to her under his breath, peering at a buck through the scope of the rifle.
“You will paint yourself into a tight corner if you rely on any one thing to protect you. If you have a gun, you must also have a knife. If you have a knife, you must also have your wits about you.”
Why do you teach her these awful things? her mother would ask.
To protect her, her father would answer.
After each hunt, the girl would ride into town with her father, a bloodied, steaming kill already weighing down the truck bed before the sun had even fully risen. Throwing open the doors of the lone diner in town, cheeks still rosy from the cold and dirt staining their gloves, a crowd of familiar greetings from the gruff laborers at the bar would rise to greet the pair. The selkie man smiled cordially while his daughter lingered behind, clasping her wrist behind a ramrod-straight back.
My, she’s quite grown up now. You’ll have to start fending off the crowds soon. A sly wink and a smile.
No need. I have taught her how to shoot. A shared laugh.
