"Bow down, and profess your love unto me, your Lord. Or I shall destroy you."
It was Robert Singer who sank to the floor first, struggling to kneel in his old age, but kneel he did. He understood the wisest course of action. Sam followed suit, keeping his eyes cast downward out of respect for the new Lord. Good. It seems the failed Boy King of Hell understood his place next to his superiors. However, it was Dean, the Righteous Man who stood. Ever willful. Ever defiant.
"Dean," Robert said, his voice a warning. Dean looked back on the man he loved as a father and then turned to Castiel once more. He held Castiel's gaze as he sank to the floor, knees and hands bent in supplication. Good. All was as it should be.
"Dean," Castiel ordered. Look at me. See me. See what I have become to protect you. Dean cast his gaze downward, and Castiel was enraged, if only for a moment. He stepped forward and captured Dean's jaw with one hand.
"Dean Winchester." He tilted Dean's head upward, forcing their gazes to meet. "My prophet." He ran his thumb over Dean's cheek. "No longer the Michael Sword, but the Sword of my own." Castiel had thought that Dean's beauty might fade as Castiel's power grew. How wrong he had been.
"You are blessed to know the will of God. Go forth from here and spread the news that a new Lord has come. That I am better than the God of old."
"Cas," Dean said, his voice rough and low. "Cas, this isn't you. It's those things inside you. Fight it, Cas. Fight it!"
Cas. Not Castiel, Cas. Castiel was the Shield of God. Dean had taken God from him, stripped him of everything holy until he was the shield of nothing. And Dean was insufferable as to think he still had the right to call him by that name.
"Profess your love unto me, your Lord," Castiel repeated. He watched as Dean opened his mouth, struggling to speak.
Even on his knees with nothing left to lose, Dean would not say it. How dare he. After all the times Castiel had given everything, his family, his trust, his life, his love, Dean still could not say it. He should punish him greatly for disobeying his commands. But still, it was that stubbornness that made Dean his favorite.
"Cas," Dean said again, reaching up and wrapping his hand around Castiel's wrist. A bold action, but one he would allow for now. "I- I love you. Okay? Is that what you wanted to hear?"
"Stand," Castiel ordered. And like an obedient subject, Dean stood. He did not move his hand from Dean's face. Dean did not relinquish his grip on Castiel's wrist. Castiel stepped closer, until he could see every single freckle he'd meticulously repaired time and time again. "I bestow unto you a gift, should you chose to receive it."
Dean's jaw clenched. "Fine."
Castiel leaned forward, watching as Dean's eyes closed, ready to receive benediction. He pressed their lips together, waiting for the response, for acceptance, but Dean's lips were still. Motionless.
This was wrong. Dean should have been joyful, exuberant even. He should have wept with praise at Castiel's mercy. It was a gift, surely, to be the Lord's chosen one. Castiel would not bestow this favor lightly, nor on anyone else but him. But still, Dean's lips remained frozen. Receiving, but not accepting.
"No." Castiel pulled back, the realization dawning on him. He dropped his hand, but Dean did not release his grip. "You fear me. This is not love." The words tasted like acid on his tongue. What had he expected. Dean Winchester had never been one to go along with the will of God. Castiel had hoped that Dean might listen to him, be his sword, sit at his right hand. Clearly his hope had been false. After everything, Dean still did not love him.
"Cas, no I-"
Castiel held his free hand up, silencing Dean instantly. He did not want to hear any more lies, lest he be tempted to believe them. How could he have been so foolish? "It does not matter. You fear me, fight against me, refuse my aid, refuse my gifts, refuse my love, yet you remain my favorite- though you reject my favor. I bestow unto thee my blessing, Dean Winchester, and now I must be gone. There are hundreds of Raphael's followers that must be punished for their actions, millions of humans crying out for aid from God. There could be no better way to introduce them to the new Lord."
"No. Cas, wait-"
"Goodbye Dean."
And with two words, the Lord vanished. There was so much work to do.
