William's search to fill his void (ie: for the brother he doesn't even know he has)
William had never had the urge to escape before. He'd never felt so overwhelmed by these feelings and this hole in his chest.
Perhaps it wasn't so much an urge to escape, but the need to find what it was that was missing and fill this void.
Never good with words (hence the reason why no words passed his lips), he had done little much than grab a small little bag filled with belongings.
His basic understanding of the outside world was limited and it was scary to step outside of the safety of he and his mother's house. The safety of the walls no longer kept him warm and safe.
It was cold and snowing. He shivered and stumbled about clumsily in the night, not even sure where he was going. All he knew was that he had his notepad and some money, because that was important. While he was unaccustomed to life on his own, having done nothing without his mother, William has basic concept of what he would need for this undetermined journey to find something he wasn't sure of.
Everything was scattered, but his mind was oddly focused. He hardly felt the cold as he walked through the snowy streets of London.
There was nothing more extreme than this odd loneliness. This odd pain that wasn't really a pain. His concept of human emotions was a little limited, barely able to understand his own.
He knew pain, but this was a dull sort of pain that wasn't really pain. Just an idea that there was something missing that he didn't know how to describe. William didn't like it. He wanted it to stop. He didn't mind so much not understanding feelings, but this one feeling he didn't understand bugged him incredibly and he felt that the only way for it to end was for him to fix it.
The only way to fix it, he figured, was to find the thing that would fill the big hole.
--
Crunch. Crunch.
No concept of time, other that the sun was now up.
William's expression was numb and there was no sense of guilt. Even though he knew his mother would maybe be awake now and panicking and scared and trying to find him.
Maybe Lily would be worried too?
Now, there was a sense of something there. Even if William wasn't entirely sure what it was.
The girl was pretty. Very pretty.
Her blue eyes reminded him of an ocean, even though he'd never really seen one up close. Her hair was really soft too. It smelt rather nice. Not like flowers or something menial like that. Just like Lily. Though, perhaps that was an odd concept.
His mother just smelt like his mother. People smelt like people, not flowers.
Either way, it was only when he thought about her that perhaps he might have momentarily contemplated going back home. Even though he'd walked for so long and probably had gone so far.
He kept travelling onwards though, his feet continuing upon their chosen path. Even though he didn't recognise his surroundings anymore.
--
Fill it.
It's empty.
I want it filled.
I don't want to think about this hole anymore.
No one can fix it.
I have to fix it.
I need to find the right thing to fix it.
Where?
--
No concept of time.
William didn't sleep. Didn't eat.
He walked.
He didn't know where he was, where he was going.
None of that had changed.
He probably could have afforded one night in a hotel, but he held no concept of how to ask for such things. Even if he did, he had become so focused on his open-ended and seemingly inplausible goal that he didn't even realise that he was becoming exhausted and somewhat thin.
No sleep.
His sustenance was a granola bar he'd brought with him and a bottle of water that was running near empty.
His expression was hard, determined. His lips pursed. He wore his cap on his head snugly to help keep his ears warm and his hair, dusty coloured and messy, was tied back into a ponytail that meekly mimicked what he'd once seen his mother do.
--
Do you have the thing?
The thing that will fill this hole.
I can't explain it.
It's a hole.
I can stick my arm through it.
You could probably walk through it.
You wouldn't be able to fill it though.
Do you have the thing that can?
Then I can fix the hole.
And return to Mommy.
--
William had tripped and his hands had scraped hard along the dirt. Skin came loose and blood began to spill.
As they did when he was a child, tears immediately sprang.
They did not fall, however.
He shook as he stood. The bloody, scraped, cold hands trembled as he wiped the palms on his jeans and continued onwards.
The need to fill this hole overrode his want to cry.
--
William.
Mommy thought it was cute.
I don't care much.
Everyone has a name.
It's necessary, right?
Can you tell me where to go now?
To fill the hole?
Please?
Then I can go home.
I'm really tired.
I'm hungry too.
--
The minute a hand touched him that William did not recognise, he lashed.
It was surprising, really, the sudden fear and rush of emotion that washed over him. However, it wasn't something he computed as he swung out. His soft, but thin fist connecting hard with someone's jaw.
Caught by surprise at the small young man's show of energy and strength, the one who had touched him was strewn across the ground and winded.
William only stared for a moment, taken aback as well before his instinct to flee kicked in. He'd never hit someone before.
He ran.
"Agent Williams!"
Williams was his surname, but he didn't know these people.
--
Oh.
You remind me of Mommy.
Except weirder.
--
Somehow, William didn't even have the urge to cry now.
Maybe it was because he wasn't bleeding and he wasn't really hurting. He wasn't so scared either.
Or, maybe it was because he was so startled and taken with curiousity as he was tied up and thrown over a strong man's shoulder. He was still and allowed himself to be carried. They covered his eyes soon, though.
William didn't like that.
He squirmed.
They hit him.
He cried then.
Now he was scared.
--
Are you going to kill me?
Are you going to use words?
I am using words.
Speak, boy.
I don't speak.
You're fully capable.
I don't speak.
Why not?
I don't want to speak yet because I'm not ready. I'm sad.
Why are you here?
A man touched me. I don't like being touched, so I hit him and ran away.
Why were you in this general vicinity, then? You're not supposed to be.
I left Mommy. I have this hole...
Hole?
I want to fill it. To make it not bother me anymore. Then I can talk and Mommy won't be sad anymore. I can't talk until I feel all put together. I'm not Humpty Dumpty. Something was missing all my life. I don't know what. Can you fill it?
Can I what?
Fill it.
