Barran the Bold, Lillica Foster, Mender Duncan, Esrenniel, Gavaya Querii, Iudrix
Everyone arrives back in Kessex, and people are yelled at by Lillica. Continuation of this RP.
Warnings: Yelling, rebellion, anger.
raumlet
Barran was the first one up and over the hill, this time unburdened by her Cycle-mate; she bounced at the top of the hill and shaded her eyes to peer into the little down below her. The word quaint sprung to mind, minus the rocky guards posted at the top of the stairs. As the rest of the party crested the hill, she dashed up to one of the elementals and, folding her arms behind her back, began to circle it. "Iudrix, are these the elementals you were talking about? What's so frightening about them?" Without waiting for the mesmer to answer, she reached out and put her hand flat on the rocky abdomen in front of her. "They seem like any other elemental I've seen - I don't know what you're afraid of." Ren was the last one up the hill, and he sighed to see the sapling now picking at the rock of the elemental. The freedom outside of the Grove seemed to agree with the saplings; even Iudrix had perked up once they'd put some distance between them and the Grove. "Barran, please... Please just leave it alone. The last thing any of us need is more trouble." She pouted, but she rejoined the group, her arms folded under her breasts.(edited)
Lillica
Lillica was waiting in her office, peering out her window, arms crossed, lips tight. Atop her desk sat a letter with the Consortium letterhead. It was angry, long, and vague enough to be one of their stock formats. At the very least, it had been mass produced. Two others like it were in the mail downstairs, addressed to Ren and Querii. Iudrix, being unofficially involved with the Institute of Apprenticeship, had been spared. That didn't meet he was unmentioned. In Lillica's letter there was a terse P.S. Warning against the use of Consortium funding for non Consortium agents, which she took to be referring to Iudrix. When Querii, Ren, and Iudrix finally came into view, Lillica was surprised. Despite whatever had happened in the Grove (she wasn't sure of the details just yet) they had managed to bring back additional sylvari. Something seemed off though. There was no aura, not even a faint one, when she put on her Grade-C goggles. That meant either her gadget was broken, or they weren't Mesmers.
Brom
Barran's prodding had set off another flurry of butterflies, Iudrix hiding behind Ren and waving his hands in a silent plea to knock that shit off. He wouldn't even explain in front of them. And his sword was gone. While they were so close at least. He calmed down when they weren't so close, though, trudging up the hill and back towards where he actually belonged. Now.
Yavril
Duncan trudged behind everyone else but Ren, not quite panting but taking deep breaths. He was not used to long distance travel, not yet. But he'd learn. He watched everyone else see the town, finally in view, and see it himself. It was small and plain, but there was a nice feeling about it. He wondered what to expect from the humans - and, as Barran had pointed out, elementals - nearby. Not to mention the experiments he and Barran had be brought on for. Querii had been mostly quiet the entire journey, fidling with one thing or another in her mechanical bag of mysteries, sometimes muttering something vague about readings only loud enough for someone right beside her. Now, she toyed with her staff, having seemingly finished whatever she'd been doing the rest of the trip. She'd need Lillica and the Sylvari's full cooporation to continue.
raumlet
Ren took the lead as they entered the town, making a beeline for the door to the apartment which was definitely not going to be large enough to accommodate all of them - but that was a problem for later, after he'd had a chance to lie on his bed and weep. Herding the saplings was draining what little energy he had left after that disaster. "We're almost there," he called back to them, motioning towards the little building perched near the edge of the walkway overlooking the bay.
Lillica
When they reached the door it swung open in a flash. Lillica was there in the doorway, one hand one her hips, the other tossing the Consortium letter at Ren's face. "Explain this to me now. Something happened, it was bad, and Iudrix was involved . Try sidestepping and I'll know. I'll also cut all of your funding. All of you," she said, looking back towards Querii, "And who are these two you found? Are they Mesmers?"
Yavril
Querii, a little taken aback, frowned up at Lillica rebeliouslly - she would not be stepped on. "No, they are not. I just need them to compare physically and mentally to ludrix." She looked up at Ren - he should probably explain for himself what had happened. Duncan looked between them, not necessarily frightened of the woman, but at least wary. "I am an elementalist? If that helps?" He got the feeling no one was paying attention to him, though, and took a step back so as not to be in the direct line of fire.
raumlet
Ren flinched away from the letter like it was a physical blow; it fell to the planks at his feet, where it lay innocently as he stared down at it, tears welling in his eyes again. Rather than answer, he hid his face in a hand, his shoulders sagging under the weight of Lil's anger. This was absolutely the last thing he felt equipped to handle right now - now he was in trouble not on one front, but three: With the Grove, with the Consortium, and with Lillica. He didn't understand how they'd caught wind of this so quickly. "Lil," he ventured, but his voice broke immediately.
Brom
"Ren got put in jail. I- I broke him out. I didn't- I made a portal. I made a portal in the bars and pulled him out and then we ran." Iudrix stood up straight and tall, butterflies fluttering around him. He looked and felt so tired, and still scared, but- it was something he did and Ren shouldn't be yelled at.
Lillica
"It doesn't help me very much, no," Lillica said to Duncan, "You'll be Querii's task instead." Then she turned back to the Consortium core to continue he scolding, "A jailbreak. Perfect. I'm already banned from Divinity's Reach, and now the grove will be considerably tougher to work with as well. That leaves the Asura, norn, and charr to gather chronomancers from for my research. Asura aside, I think you should see the issue by now," she sighed, stepping back to let everyone inside, "I made tea. Everyone sit at the table and explain things fully. I want to make sure you understand that it's not the actions you took which anger me most, it's that you were all traced back to the Consortium. How did they find out? And so quickly no less?"
Yavril
Querii shrugged, walking inside and past Lillica unphased. "Probably because I mentioned that Esrenniel was part of the Consortium to the Wardens." From her tone it was unclear if she felt no shame or if she was unaware that perhaps she should. She dropped her bag on a table and hopped atop one of the chairs to sift through it. It occured to Duncan it might be best to stay outside, but with the rest of the group moving inwards, he had little say - and no one seemed to care much what he did. That in mind, he sat to the side and watched the events unfold with curiousity.
raumlet
Ren followed meekly to the kitchen and more or less fell into a chair, still covering his face to hide the tears that continued to drip down his chin. "I t-tried to - to tell th-them to get you," he half-sobbed when he was finally able to force himself to speak. Barran, for her part, was mostly ignoring them all in favor of staring around, wide-eyed, at the clutter in the place. This was far more interesting than the sparse houses of the Grove.(edited)
Brom
The butterflies vanished with his fear as it became more obvious that Lil wasn't going to pull out her gun and shoot anyone, or even yell that much. Iudrix sagged, wings drooping as he sighed. He too followed them into the kitchen, sitting next to Ren to lean against his bulky side. "There were bars and a cage and I couldn't leave him and they wouldn't listen and he was locked up and I couldn't." His eyes were still pink as he looked to Lillica, words spilling out in a semi coherent stream. "I did it. It's my fault."
Lillica
"You aren't an issue here Iudrix. Because you aren't associated with the Consortium officially, your actions can't be used to give further bad press. Ren, you seem to have been more a victim than anything through it all. But Querii..." Lillica narrowed her eyes, "You were incredibly stupid. I'd expected that you of all people would be conscious about your actions. Instead, you openly declare Consortium affiliation, then proceed to break someone out of jail without any thought to keeping it secretive. If you're going to declare Consortium affiliation, from that point onwards you need to act knowing there are countless other lives that will be influenced by how you make their employer look. If you decide to take action alone, keep your lips right and move quickly. It's one or the other, but you did both in the worst possible order."
Yavril
There were a lot of things Querii could put up with. Lillica's overpowering leadership. The Pale Tree's vague question answers. Her peer being locked in a dungeon for her to rescue. But there was no way she would put up with being called stupid. Never. "Firstly," she began, nostrils flaring as she tossed something back into her bag to glare furiously at Lillica, "declaring Esrenniel a part of the Consortium was primarily a descriptor, and if it happened to mean the Wardens might release him, so be it! And need I remind you it was not me who broke Esrenniel from jail? That was ludrix's doing, no matter how well he meant. Once Esrenniel was out of his cage, there was no way the Wardens would allow us to leave - ludrix, Duncan, Barran and I would all be in a Grove jail cell. I had to react to the situation and get a valuable resource out of harms way. And, of course, none of this is considering that even though I am part of a Consortium program I know little to nothing about the Consortium itself. You are annoyingly vague about the organization's end goals. I do not know where, why, when or how there might be a Consortium agent around, which not a perfect way to run an organization." She steamrolled the conversation towards their sapling friends easily, gesturing widely towards Duncan and Barran, "But perhaps you would rather not scare off or upset the saplings and focus back on our current project instead of arguing about something we clearly cannot change?"
raumlet
"I don't think the Wardens would have jailed us," Barran piped up helpfully from where she'd parked herself next to Duncan. "We amounted to bystanders, after all. But that was terribly fun - wasn't it?" She elbowed Duncan as she spoke.
Brom
Iudrix slowly leaned forward until he could rest his cheek on the table, his wings sticking out from his back at odd half-limp angles. "I'm not gonna be very useful right now. I'm not really feeling like I can do very much," he mumbled.
Lillica
Lillica wouldn't be flustered by fast talking and good points, oh no, she was trained by skritt. She had lived in a scratch for quite awhile, and not just any scratch. It was one of the few where enough skritt had massed to be deems intelligent, enough to drive out the Asura who were testing on them, take control of the facility, and re-engineer the Asuran golems to serve a mass of rat masters. One Asura talking fast? Try a city of skritt. Lillica had practically guessed what Querii would say before her sentences were even finished. "The goals are all over the place. At the very least, they're in the paperwork I hands you when you signed on. Maybe you just think you're too smart to have to read, is that it? I hope not," this time it was her turn to force Querii off of her high horse, "Beyond that, I've been absolutely clear about the goal of this project, this institute I am in charge off. I told you and everyone else up front that the mission is to fund and contract Tyria's best and brightest before anyone else does. A simple goal like that, maybe it's too simple for an Asura to grasp at. Not enough deception, I take it? On the topic of simplicity and deception, it shouldn't be hard to identify Consortium agents. We all wear Gold and Blue, with the exception of contracted workers and scientists like yourself who feel it's too much to ask that you dye a pair of pants. So I stand by what I said. You've disappointed me, you can't seem to identify very basic patterns as dress color, and instead try to use any means necessary to insult and corner me when for your own foolish actions. Skritt can get smarter. Asura? Let's see how that goes. Don't make a mistake like this again." Lillica then turned to the saplings, "You all seem fine. I'm working primarily with chaotic technology and magics right now, so I'm afraid you won't be worth much for my own studies unless you're a Mesmer. If you decide to take an interest in science, +research, or engineering, you now know where my place of work is. Feel free to ask me about ways to get involve with the Consortium. In the meantime, enjoy your tea and await Querii's instructions. Beds are upstairs." Lillica took a breath and turned to the door, she had ample paperwork to get done now. Ren did too but... She decided to wait on having him write his statement, at least for the night.
Yavril
Querii didn't speak as Lillica stormed out of the room, only flared her nostrils and watched with piercing eyes. Perhaps surprisingly, she was rather satisfied with Lillica's answer, despite the urge to chase her and defend herself. The use of base insults and comparing her to a Skritt confirmed to her that Lillica had few solid arguements, and she would not be phased. She didn't shift a single muscle until Lillica had gone. When she finally had, Querii didn't speak, instead using the awkward silence to rummage through her bag again.Duncan had smiled and shrugged up at Barran, with an admitted, "Yeah, kind of." When Lillica exploded on Querii, both women with more fire in their eyes than Duncan thought he could ever summon mentally or magically, he had frozen. Fear wasn't exactly the right emotion for his state of mind - something more akin to fear mixed with warrieness and a dash of survival instinct and the realization he didn't know these people at all, and now he was in the middle of their war-like arguments.
raumlet
Ren stayed quiet while they argued; he'd drooped to the table with his head still in his hands so that he was lying next to Iudrix, the both of them bent over the table in exhaustion. Relief warred with his overwhelming despair - at the least, the very least, Lil was not angry with him. The Wardens would never let him enter the Grove again, not without a long stay in a jail cell and who knows what else for punishment, but Lil didn't blame him. That small weight was lifted, and he relaxed a bit against Iudrix. "I th-think I'll... bathe and.... And go to sleep. Oh..." Blearily, he lifted his tear-stained face from the table and looked over at the saplings. They needed to be fed, probably, and shown to their rooms, settled into the place... But he wasn't sure he had the energy to do it. He wiped his face. "Um..." Barran just stared back at him, smiling a little. The fight hadn't phased her in the slightest.
Yavril
"I don't suppose any of you know any trained mesmers for Lillica-" Querii had started saying, before Ren spoke. She looked back at him, then Duncan and Barran, and heaved a sigh. "Go to bed, Esrenniel. I'll deal with them. I can't have you bursting into tears anymore - maybe some rest will do you good." She had absolutely no idea where to put the Sylvari, or even the layout of the rest of the building, but Ren clearly was of little use to her in his current state. Duncan shook his head slightly at her unfinished, half asked question.
Brom
Iudrix didn't lift his head, the argument sweeping over him like every other thing Lillica tried to explain. He didn't even consider what was going to happen to Barran and Duncan- they were here, everyone was here. He was home and that was what mattered. Frankly, he would be perfectly happy just sleeping here on the table.
raumlet
"Thank you," Ren said weakly. At least he wasn't crying anymore. Before he got up, he nudged Iudrix. "Don't sleep there. Do you need help?"
Brom
"I'm fine." Iudrix looked up at him with a soft smile. He sat up, rolling his skinny shoulders before standing. For a moment he turned his gaze to Querii. There were words to be said, but the young mesmer left them unspoken. Instead he just nodded awkwardly and slinked off towards the hammock still strung up in one corner.
Yavril
Querii took a deep breath, looking back to the attentive Sylvari saplings, waiting to know what to do. She was too tired from the trip to explain everything at the moment, so she just said, "Wait here, I'm going to look around for somewhere for you to stay." She disappeared without waiting for their response. Duncan watched her leave quietly and without argument - everyone seemed to be worn out, except for Barran. He looked up at her, wondering where she got her energy.
raumlet
Ren stood by his chair, just rubbing his face and contemplating how absolutely terrible things had turned, until he noticed Iudrix slinking off to the living room and his makeshift 'room' - Ren had strung a sheet up to give him some privacy, but it wasn't much. He hurried after him into the hall. "O-oh, Drix, there's. Um. I - cleared space for a bed in the attic. It's..." He shrugged, too exhausted to think of what he wanted to say. "It isn't much." Barran caught his eye from where she was lightly bouncing her shoulderblades off the wall, and squatted down to lean towards him once they were alone in the kitchen. "Do you think they'll let us back in the Grove now?"
Brom
He stopped, turning around. "Is there one up ther--" he shook his head. "It doesn't matter. Thank you." The skinny sapling turned towards the stairs instead, stumbling up them to find whatever space had been made. Even the floor was good.
Yavril
Duncan watched the Sylvari go before answering Barran - he wasn't quite ready to talk about anything even remotely personal in front of these people yet. "I... thought about that," he said, looking away from her and twidling his thumbs. "But like you said, we were only bystanders, right?" He groaned as he shifted his legs to a more comfortable position. "But in any case I'm not sure I need to go back. I learned most of what the Menders can teach me already. I want to move on to other places."
raumlet
"....Until we ran away with them," she said, folding her arms over her knees. She resumed her bouncing, pushing off the wall so that she was gently bopping back and forth. In the moment, she hadn't minded; but now it was sinking in that she wouldn't be curling up in her leafy hammock tonight, and she found that she was unsettled. "I don't know that I was quite ready to bar myself from the Grove forever," she admitted, glancing over at him guiltily. "Do you think we're... alright?" Out in the hallway, Ren watched Iudrix make his way up the stairs. There was a dusty little cot up there - he hoped Drix would be able to fit. If not, Ren had something else to focus on besides being chased out of the Grove by the Wardens. With a heavy sigh, he started up the stairs after him. A bath and some sleep sounded good right now.(edited)
Yavril
Duncan peered over to Barran curiously, taking in what she had to say. There certainly was a comforting feeling about being surrounded by the Pale Tree and other Sylvari that he didn't know if he wanted to let go, but that was something he wouldn't admit even to her. "Alright... how?" He asked. "Safe? I think so. The crying one seems kind enough, when he isn't... you know, crying. I can't tell that any of the Sylvari want us harmed. The Asura... I don't know, but I think the others would stop her if she did anything crazy." Querii was poking around the rest of the house, amazed at the mess just three people had managed to make - equipment and garbage, among other things, had been pilled high all across what few rooms there were. The room the saplings were in now honestly seemed like the emptiest space. So instead of looking for a bed of any sort, she began to hunt for blankets and pillows. She knew the Sylvari didn't really have blankets, but on the hard ground, or maybe ontop of some of the boxes, they'd probably want some.(edited)
Brom
There was a bed! Sort of. Iudrix tugged the little cot out away from the wall, positioning it in the middle of the cleared space so he had a bit of room. Making sure there wasn't too much dust he dropped his sword on the floor and slid it underneath with one foot before flopping down on his stomach. His feet hung off the end and his hand dragged on the floor but it was quiet and it was good and it was home. And he was asleep.
raumlet
"Did we make the right decision? Iudrix doesn't seem very stable. I noticed before we left, but I assumed that he was nervous, like the big one. But now," she glanced around the kitchen, chewing on her lip. "What if our assistance is furthering something we should have no involvement in? I suppose I'm just nervous." Sighing, she rested her chin on her arms.
Yavril
"If you're that worried, we'll ask. It'll be okay." He rested a hand on her shoulder, hoping he was helping, "You have every right to be nervous." He glanced at the doors of the room, thinking of the older Sylvari, "After all... in comparison to these Sylvari, we're young and unexperienced. Except maybe ludrix, but even he seems to have seen more of the world than us." Querii re-entered the room, stopping Duncan before he could say more. "I'm afraid Lillica, Esrenniel and ludrix don't seem to be very tidy, and there isn't room anywhere. I'll work on it tomorrow, if I can spare the time." She noticed the clear absense of ludrix and frowned. "Well, if he isn't using his hammock, one of you can. I don't know that both of you would fit, or if you'd be alright with that. In her arms were spread several full length blankets and a pillow, and she was having trouble holding it all. She finally dumped the load on the ground in front of her. Duncan shook his head, "Ren made him a bed upstairs, he said." He picked up two of the blankets, and tossed one lightly to Barrran. "You take the hammock."December 31, 2015
raumlet
"Let's see if we can both fit before we decide," Barran replied. She caught the blanket and yanked another out of his arms beside, slinging them both over her shoulders and scooping up the pillow. "Where is it?" The hammock Querii led them to was indeed big enough for two people - Barran kicked off her boots and clambered onto it, into the corner closest to the wall. It was fairly comfortable, actually, with the padded cloth folding up around her. It was almost, almost as good as her hammock at home.
Lillica
While everyone got ready for bed, Lillica was preparing papers for the team, new and old. Querii had broken Ren out of jail, but made a complete mess of it as far as the Consortium was was concerned. She would likely be reprimanded. As much as Lillica was furious at her for not accepting an ounce of responsibility for her actions, she knew that Querii was just one of many people under her own Institute of Apprenticeship. As the project head, it was honestly a failure on Lillica's behalf to have not been supervising them better. So, she was hard at work writing letters to request that Querii's research budget be spared, that she had demonstrated "positive leadership under pressure" and that her area of expertise would be incredibly beneficial in these trying times. As for the other letters and papers, she'd started filling out some information on Iudrix. It was an official Institute of Apprenticeship application, under the title of assistant, designated with potential to advance to being a researcher. She'd need him to fill it out later. After the grove incident, it couldn't be kept a secret much longer that Consortium funds were being used to support non essential personnel. There were similar papers for the other two newcomers, though they were consent forms as research and test subjects, like the ones Iudrix filled out when he first arrived in Garrenhoff. There were five more forms, in which everyone would have to right their own detailed account of the Grove jailbreak. She hoped their stories were good enough to spare the institutes budget any major thinning."Well then," she finally said, yawning and leaning back in her chair, "The rest they'll have to write up tomorrow morning." And with that, she shut off the lights, flopped on the floor, and curled up to sleep under her bed.
Yavril
Duncan threw a glance at Querii, who didn't seem to be paying attention to them - she was rummaging through her bag again. He began to wonder if she'd ever stop going through it. Upon examination of the hammock, Duncan saw that it probably was big enough for the both of them, especially considering Duncan was a little smaller than Barran. Though not by much, he kept saying. So, with a shrug, he followed Barran, trying not to get the thing to tip over. It was certainly bigger than his hammock from the Grove, which fit only one. It was different, too - made of cloth instead of living material. As he settled in next to Barran, he found himself missing the calming thrum of the Grove around him, the alive feeling. The closest alive thing here was some mold he had spotted in a corner upon their entry. He almost regretted leaving, but he knew he wasn't destined to stay in the Grove forever, and he had to start somewhere. Maybe these Consortium people would have some healing techniques he could study. "Goodnight, Barran," he muttered. Querii, having finally found what she was looking for - a small, rectangular device and a screwdriver, apparently - exited the room in silence. She hadn't really considered where she might sleep, but she wasn't over-worried. It wouldn't be the first time she'd sleep uncomfortably in the name of science. She had another blanket in the next room that she spread across the hard floor; it was so long she could wrap herself in it several times over. As she began to fiddle with her rectangle and doze off, she thought to herself that the next day might have to be less science and more cleaning, if five Sylvari and an Asura were going to be staying for any extended period of time.(edited)
Lillica
Outside, a chorus of tiny, scratchy voices whispered in not-quite-unison, "Arrived! Arrived? Nonono, red tree isn't here. We wait? Yes, wait. Tomorrow see where red tree is." As the sun set, a mass of rats curled up under the many roofs and balconies of Garenhoff, all chittering to eachother tiny good nights.
Can we sleep yet? I'm tired...
Not yet, one more chapter.
From a shoot I did today, not sure which one I like more.
Inspired by the june Resin Aperture challenge which is warm and cool... not sure if i'll use one of these as my entry though yet. I think I want to try and shoot something a little more definitively warm...?
