Pictures don’t really convey the quiet beauty of this place. It’s hundreds of acres of wetlands carved out of river-bottom land along the Monocacy River. Filled with aquatic plants and dazzling, ornamental fish, there’s a quiet hush found in the shaded spaces dotted throughout the grounds. . Go for the beauty, the nature, the water. . . Happy Father’s Day to my darling father - who has shepherded 4 girls, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren through this life. He’s been my mentor, cheerleader, encourager, and guide through thick and thin. Thank-you, Daddy! . By the way, that photo from the newspaper is circa June 1986. It was just one year after I’d graduated from college, and I was working for him at Lilypons, our family business. He conceived of the idea of celebrating the day in 1936, that Lily Pons, the opera star, had visited what was then known as Three Springs Fisheries, and gave the new US Post Office situated there, her name. He believed that I, a 22-year-old, with virtually no experience could put it all together. I wasn’t so sure. But with his guidance and vision, together we created a weekend event which included a re-enactor playing the part of Miss Pons, the descendants and representatives of every significant official, contributor, and participant, local and state officials and invited guests celebrating with a catered lunch, a large public event on the grounds of Lilypons, an evening reception and a free showing of “I Sing Too Much” starring Lily Pons, and the then-unknown Henry Fonda. Yup - in 1986 it took some digging to find an actual film reel of that baby! . The newspaper clipping is from when Frederick County officially declared June 20, 1986 Lily Pons Day.
