It rained today the first day in ages when a drought had its burning hand wrapped around our throats and we thirsted for water looking to the sky and none came for weeks till finally the skies darkened and the grasp relented and I caught my breath and felt the coolness of fresh late August rain and everything smelled sweet, like wet concrete, like wet grass, like the promise that tomorrow, flowers will blossom in the valley.
