Here’s an animation commission I did for @samaradraws back in January, featuring their OCs Kitani, El, and Silica. I couldn’t share it until now because it ended up being a Valentine’s Day gift! This interaction was really fun to do and I’m super grateful to samaradraws for choosing me for the job!
This is.... very late, I know, but I’ve realized that I will likely never finish it past this point. Me and my perfectionist self. >.< This is a fully-tweened version of the Soriel keyframe animation I posted about a year ago [X], which is itself based on two sets of drawings I posted earlier [X][X]. Enjoy!
behold, the first and only piece of 3d character animation i have ever done
but hopefully not the last
3.28.2017 | I Did the Thing... Kind of... Also, Color Tests!
Last time I made a post (I was supposed to make another since then... darn) it was unclear whether I was going to make the rough cut deadline. Well, I made it! Sort of. Technically I didn’t have full coverage -- still don’t -- but hey, some people just work all non-linear like that. Shrug. The critique went well, anyway. Within the past few days I’ve made myself a plan that, if executed correctly, should allow me to finish my thesis in time for the frustratingly early film festival deadline (4/14) while also not dying. Here’s hoping.
This week is a screen test, so naturally I wanted to get in some color and see how my scheme looks on-screen. (Did I mention I finally figured out my colors?) The party scene is a little.... overwhelming? So I’ll probably end up changing those colors to a less jarring combination. This is gonna be played on a huge theater screen, after all. The two still images above are my color references; the one on the left is a kind of abbreviated color script (I still need to figure out Aster’s colors for the outdoor shots, hence the blank spot) and the one on the right is a better reference for the party shots, since I’m just doing the colored light as a Multiply layer overtop.
Other progress that isn’t visible like this stuff: Aster’s voice. We were recommended to contact Taz Achey, a junior here, for voice work, and boy am I glad I did! He’s super fun to work with, and a perfect fit for Aster. I only recorded laughter and life-affirming sounds from him (along with some foley), but I wish I could’ve had some dialogue for him to deliver! It would’ve been fun lipsync material for when I have some time on my hands.
Goals for the next week:
Have enough sound done to get useful feedback from Matt
Finish ALL rough animation
Chug along on inking & coloring; treat it as part of the same process as animating (also probably get my team to each do at least one more assignment)
Add extra gag at the end that classmates suggested
That is......... a lot. When I put it like that. It looks more feasible on my schedule. Well, guess we’ll see how it goes. I’m aiming to finish sometime between 4/11 and 4/13, as the fine cut is due 4/12 and the festival deadline is 4/14. Even if I miss those two deadlines, I’ll still be in a pretty awesome spot to finish by the actual thesis deadline, 4/26. Shoot for the moon, land among the stars.
4.4.2017 | Oh, Aster...
Animating Aster is about 80% of my problems now. Above are two of the longest/most complex things I had to animate him doing, so at least those are out of the way. The second one is especially interesting to me because I basically animated it straight-ahead. Shrug. Maybe I work better that way.
2.28.2017 | See? Progress! Yeah...
Here's more or less what I presented last Wednesday, with a few extras added in (like the crowd walk and the shot of Aster sighing). Also animation notes! For that Thesis Bible we're supposed to be working on!
dance dance dance!
