Calle Ávila, Linares, Jaén, Andalusia.
A city in Spain (Linares, in Andalucía) has censored the Ancient Greek theatre play Lysistrata.
It happened on March 8th, during the city's commemoration of International Women's Day. The plan was to give the awards to outstanding women from the city and then proceed with the theatre play. The awards were given as planned but, 5 minutes into the play, the City Councillor in charge of the Culture Department (from the Partido Popular, right-wing party) stood up and stopped the play. The people watching were surprised, but didn't protest nor complain. Some of them have claimed that they first assumed it was part of the play.
The Culture Councillor denies that this is censorship and says the play had to stop because "the content and language were not fit for the audience in the room, which included elderly people and children" because it included "rude words, inappropriate for minors" and a "high sexual content", adding "If I had known earlier that this play includes such radical content, we would not have accepted it".
The last recorded time that Lysistrata was censored was in 1955 in the USA.
The theatre play, written in 411 BC, is a comedy that tells the story of a group of women who set their minds on stopping their husbands from fighting a war. Their strategy is to start a sex strike, convincing all Greek women to not have sex with their husbands until there's a ceasefire and they negotiate the peace.
