Frames of Conflict 2015
...as a process of line-making.
The fourth iteration of the ongoing ‘score for being’ that underpins the oscillations project.
The score consists of a thirteen page booklet to be distributed to both the performer and their audience, with text instructions for both parties. Although a originally a score for a modular synthesizer, increasingly the works pertains to more generalised gestures or positions to be taken in relation to life in general.
Poetic language is used to disrupt the linearity of a direct cause and effect relationship between instruction and action, resulting in a score that has little in the way of fixed content - the material that is created is dependent both on the wider position of its actor (their mood, composure, etc.), and on the manner in which the previous section of text was interpreted, and the material it resulted in.
In this way, the work is neither improvised or pre-composed - rather, it’s composition is established within a real-time relation to it’s space of transmission, the prior gestures and motives of the artist, and the emergent interpretation of the text. It could thus be considered - in so far as it is relational, inconsistent, and is an action that by its utterance points directly to further intentions - performative, in the truest sense of the word.
