“Can I?“ how surprising how this had became a routine for her by now. it seems her dad just likes keeping detective grayson close and being the one to pick up gwen when she is late at college. there is a coffee in her hand and one given to him. “The thing is, I’m not sure what I want to do.“ there is a short pause as she drinks her coffee, a small smile slipping through her lips. “I went to explore the world. Study somewhere else. But after that? I don’t know, I think with everything, one has to take one day at a time.” superheroes, vigilantes, aliens from out of space. somehow what to study next feels less important now than it used to.

“Are you saying we are not real, Rae?“ and there is a short pause, green eyes shift and stare back to her own eyes with ease. it has been years since they met each other and yet, he still remembers their first meeting, a long time ago when they were younger and innocent. or as innocent as they could be back then. time and experience tainted them both and he fears he would do her more bad than good, thus the main reason why he haven’t done what she was suggesting. not that kissing her haven’t crossed his mind. because it had.

 they are close now, sitting side by side at the top of a building and simply talking, being themselves, no costumes between them. no double identities.  “i’m not sure it would be a good idea.” he whispers, but arguments are weak when his own body is shifting closer.

CURTAINS DRAWN, SUN SLIPPING THROUGH. green eyes shut harder than before as jason wraps the warm blanket around his head. somehow, in the middle of the night, he had managed to slip from the bed to the ground. alfred had once said it was natural for the kid to do, considering the living conditions he had been the past years of his life. he shifts and looks at the man and frowns. he knows he shouldn’t judge, but it’s hard when the richest man in town is currently in his room waking him up at sunrise. “man, go away. what am I going to do at sunrise? go to school?” and he laughs at the idea. the last time he went to one was a week after his dad went to prison.

“SECOND CHANCES ARE OVERRATED. and i never wanted a second chance.“ but no one asks the dead if they want to come back to the living. no one ask them if the pain of ever day is worth the extra day of breathing. “home where? the narrows? perhaps the bathroom where i found my dead mother. or you mean the mansion in where a man who couldn’t deal with his trauma properly trained me to be a soldier at age 14?“ 

it’s all a bravado and half truths. because jason knew back then what it meant when he met bruce. he knew what was expected and he relished on it. it’s just easier for him to complain. he would prefer that over thinking it was all his fault. or the joker’s. “I never had a home but Gotham City. And I’m as close to it as I can bare.”
