People have been talking about doing fanart for the podcast when we drop our teaser (already!!!????) - and obviously, we are way too excited for even the possibility of that. We’re still kind of reeling with the possibility, honestly. 

We do not want to stifle anyone’s creativity in their portrayals of characters beyond what is mentioned in the podcast, so we try to keep our descriptions clear enough for some ideas to form, but vague enough for people to interpret as they please. 

However, we did want to make a fun little reference for the main character, Mari. Two of her most prized possessions from home are her pendants, which she wears everywhere: 

An anting-anting or agimat, which is a tiny charm that grants Mari protection from evil 

and a lingling-o, which is an ancient fertility symbol that brings her good luck. 

Mari will pretty much constantly wear these, at least when she leaves home or goes on adventures and investigates cases with Donner and Murphy. They are fairly small, not too unwieldy or obvious. And they do, of course, have some deep significance to her.

I was able to order a Lingling-o from an Ifugao store and the owner is bringing the pendants in this weekend for pickup I'm so excited

I'm also planning to have this tattooed somewhere on my body. Sadly not over my womb where is supposed to be because my fat rolls make it inadvisable to tattoo since the design might become misshapen later, but probably over my chest or something

Both forms are feminine symbols, one shaped like the womb and the other shaped like a uterus. The symbolism was seen on much of ancient currency and they were often used as earrings or amulets, and are marketed as bringing fertility to women and virility to men.

It's a cultural symbol and I wanted to bring one with me as a piece of home for when I'm in another country. I'm excited to see it.

Lingling-O Tattoo

"I designed this based on the basic shape of the Ifugao ornament called the lingling-o, said to bring fertility and supernatural powers to the wearer. It symbolizes many things: courage, the balance of male-and-female energies, and the social standing of the bearer. According to some sources, it also passes through a ritual where the ornament is bathed in blood. Perhaps its most significant meaning is that the bearer’s anitos – spirits of their ancestors – may reside in the lingling-o.

It’s been a while since I got a new tattoo, mainly because I’ve no design yet. Then it just came to me one day, when I saw my good friend Pat wearing a lingling-o around his neck, that I used to wear one back in fifth grade (I got it from a flea market in Boracay; it was small and made of brass. I loved it until my youthful carelessness took over it).

So here it is, bathed in blood as in the rituals, to mark the end of a tough year. This is for courage, for balance, and for fertility and harvest. This is for all my loved ones who have gone ahead, that they may stay with me forever and guide my hand with what they have taught me.
