This video is all about FRISIAN, a close relative of the English language.
Hello!
To all of the polyglot/langblr blogs that are following me, I am switching my langblr to another blog - @rosalielearns so please follow me over there for relative content. :)
It’s our blognniversary! Today @linguaphiles is turning 3 and we’d love to hear if you have any questions or doubts for us! You’re more than welcomed to ask us anything!
Thank you for staying, we don’t deserve so many of you! We promise we’ll do our best to get back on track and post a bit more ♥
“it’s a ballad.”: Hiddles’ Super-power, revealed
(well, according to me, anyway)
So, an interviewer asked Tom what his favorite Hank songs are now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHirsBq43Xs
He answered:
'Lovesick Blues' and 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry'.
Those are two songs at each end of Hank's range.
'Lovesick' is proto-rock and roll, really. But 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' is so deep and so... it's a ballad. It sums up so much much of what Hank has given as a musician to the rest of the tradition - about authenticity and simplicity and the expression of a certain kind of truth.
When Tom said "it's a ballad"... the way he said the word 'ballad'... It's as if he opened up a spot in my brain that intrinsically understands the root word and feeling and origin of the word "ballad." as if I were standing around a campfire in a ancient village listening to someone sing a song about love and it sparking fire in the hearts of everyone hearing it.
I think it's almost mystical and I'm not trying to get weird on you guys, here. But this was magic.
The icing on this metaphysical cake is Tom's mastery of words. He's got transcendent language skills. Absolutely cutting through words to the heart of them. As if when he pronounces the word 'ballad' it's a representation of that concept filtered down from the very first time someone ever cried at another's story, until now, through all permutations of the word in all languages until it came, formed out of his instrument and into this world like a bright bubble of water crystallized in that moment.
I swear to god I'm not stoned right now. Just a little tired and in awe of a simple word spoken by a master of words. That feeling I just had, that shiver of excitement and understanding about a damned word? That's his superpower.
a question for linguaphiles
I know of a few online sites that allow you to click-create words in foreign languages (such as Lexilogos and Type It), but I’d really like to be able to write out the characters and have it become text on my computer, so as to improve my kanji/hangul writing ability. I’ve searched online for such a tool, but so far I’ve found nothing. Any suggestions/alternatives/recommendations?
This is awesome. English, yo.
¡Hola!
Hi!
Sandra and I (Brenda) are students at the University of Barcelona. We met here on the internet some years ago and have always shared a huge passion for languages. She studies English and I'm studying Spanish/Hispanic Philology, and we would love to share the interesting aspects from both languages. Sandra is also studying Chinese, I am learning basic German and both of us speak Catalan so we will post and reblog about these languages as well.
We hope you like it!
