[image: screencap from my linguistics gradebook, showing homework with an 87.24% grade (253/290), quizzes with a 94.29% grade (33/35), attendance and active participation with an 84.11% grade (47.1/56) and midterm exams with a 99.5% grade (199/200) end image]
as you can see from my stuff, I do much better in tests in linguistics than i do in attendance/hw
probably because homework and attendance can be negatively affected by me being sick (since i missed some hw assignments due to sick and miss some classes).
NGL i’m a little annoyed my attendance and active participation isn’t higher because when i am well enough to show up, i am one of the most actively participating students in the class. i think my accommodations were supposed to prevent me from missing points due to lack of attendance but somehow not gotten through yet? or maybe it only counted for the thing where they dock you 1% of your total grade for every missed class beyond your first 3, and since this isn’t total grade it’s something else, it doesn’t count? idk
important question
“morphosyntactically”
are linguists just making up words at this point?
Linguistics teacher: talking how the direction of a diphthong is more important since it’s hard to determine the exact vowel quality of the glide
Me, a Stormlight Archive nerd: Journey Before Destination
bro casually dropping the lore that "got" has more definitions than any other word in the English dictionary like this wouldn't have life-altering consequences
Would you be interested in joining a Tumblr community that is a linguistics class?
Yes
No
No nuance. Would you join?
I saw a post expressing interest in learning linguistics a few weeks back and it had quite a few reblogs. I'm about to teach a university 101 course on the topic. I can put most of the content into a closed community, if there are people interested in it. Let me know!
To be clear: Linguistics is the study of language as a human phenomenon. It does not have to do with becoming a polyglot or buffing up your vocabulary.
Due to where I'm teaching / going to school, this course has a heavier focus on language endangerment than you may find elsewhere.
I've never been as confused as I am in my Linguistics class. Seriously, what the hell is happening??
On the bright side, I think this linguistics class is a good fit for me because I’ve been excited enough to follow all of the “more material” links in the textbook
On the down side, that means it takes 3 times as long to read the textbook
