Every time I re-read Wuthering Heights I'm like, "This time I'll be sympathetic to Linton" and every time I fail. How did Emily Brontë do it? How did she write a dying, abused teenager who is so utterly repulsive that I actually want him to die sooner and more painfully? He is The WorstTM in a novel full of despicable people.
He almost gets me when he's having a panic attack over his father in the heath, but then he gets his father to assault his newly kidnapped wife because SHOCKING! she won't stop crying (while her father is dying) and then is angry at her for making him feel a pang of conscience. How DARE she make Linton feel badly when she has a mouth full of blood! And then this is the final nail in the coffin of my possible sympathy:
"Now, Catherine, you are letting your tears fall into my cup. I won’t drink that. Give me another.”
You'll drink your tear-filled tea and you'll like it, you evil little worm

“Edgar Linton was a white boy with fair hair and blue eyes and was born into an extremely wealthy family, whereas on the other hand Heathcliff , who is described to be a POC, was an abandoned child implied to be a slave before he was taken in by the Earnshaws where, after the death of the kind and paternal Mr Earnshaw, he was forced to become a servant by Mr Earnshaw’s nefarious son, Hindley, who was jealous of the affection showered by his father on Heathcliff. Additionally, Heathcliff is constantly treated and ostracised as ‘other’ because of his skin colour and even called slurs. Linton and Heathcliff’s contrasting races and upbringings highlight their juxtaposition.”
