Just saw a dumbass Kipo post that was getting angry about Emilia feeling "guilt" over her brother in s3 and like... Did you not think that was done solely to manipulate the group of very idealistic, naive, and compassionate children? Did you not think she was preying on their kindness, their willingness to forgive? Genuinely saw someone say "we didn't need to see her eugenicist father in the flash back - we already know she's a eugenicist" and like. Are you stupid? This is a children's show, and the flash back was not only necessary to illustrate to children WHAT eugenics are (they were truly just giving north american education far too much credit LMFAO), but to also illustrate how easy it could have been for Lio and Song to go down the exact same pathway. I also feel it helped illustrate how Hugo was also very much acting in the interests of white supremacy, more specifically imperialism. There is a reason he places such focus and emphasis on him being an emperor, and there is a reason the show chose the "aesthetic" of British Imperialism with the heavy visual reference of the Redcoats to illustrate this. Use your fucking brain. Emilia is not painted as tragic at all, she is conniving and evil, she is a genuine and actual Nazi. But they still have to find ways to communicate a topic as heavy as eugenics to their child audience while also explaining/illustrating that it's bad, and why. Kipo has the respect to treat the children it is advertised to as intelligent and capable of thought, but they are still children, and critical thinking is a skill, not an inherent trait. And it is so bonkers to me to get angry at a show for spending time with such an evil subject to really sit in why it is so awful. Children do not learn about the holocaust in the explicit context of eugenics, at least not North American children. I would much rather a show assume base knowledge and attempt to build upon it than to just assume the children are immediately capable, because the children who don't are often made to feel stupid because they don't understand it. And that is just antithetical to Kipo in and of itself lol. Like sure, you're an adolescent or a young adult watching this, but it was not made with you in mind. And the reason you are capable of understanding these things is because you have had the time, life experience, and education to build your critical thinking skills. We are in an era of horrifyingly low media intelligence, and it is SO bizarre to fault a piece of media for attempting to meet its audience where they are at. You can't just throw advanced communist theory at someone who has never read The Conquest of Bread or The Communist Manifesto.
They were even angry about Jamack not having any serious moments after his initial arc. And like, yea? He's not a main character, he was never intended to be. He is someone's lackey before he stands on his own two feet and is then an ally of Kipo. He is not a leader, he has little connection to Kipo outside of him relenting on his chase for her. He is barely a rebel, he is meant to be a character who plays the fence and serves the purpose of furthering the plot. He was never meant to have as much depth of characters like Wolf, Hugo, or Benson. Some of you have got to understand the differences between main characters, and side characters, and that someone being a protagonist or antagonist does not immediately make them a main character. (For example, the lower level villains fought in BNHA are not main characters, but they are antagonists.) Like. God. I fucking hate fandom tumblr.
