The Lipstick Killer

William George Heirens was an American serial killer who confessed to three murders. He was known as the ‘Lipstick Killer,’ after leaving a message written in lipstick at one of the crime scenes.

Heirens admitted to committing petty theft as a child, claiming he mostly stole for fun and to relieve stress. At 13 years old, Heirens was arrested for the first time for carrying a loaded gun, a search of his home found several stolen weapons among other items of value. He admitted to 11 burglaries and was sent to a boys school in an attempt to reform him. When released he committed further thefts and was ordered to spend a further three years in an academy, during this second period his test scores were so high he was accepted to a course at the University of Chicago at just 16 years old. Classmates described him as popular and handsome.

Heiren’s first murder took place on 5th June 1945, Josephine Ross, 43, was found dead with her head wrapped in a dress, there were signs of a struggle. In December, the same year, Frances Brown was found with a knife lodged in her neck and a bullet wound to her head. A message had been written on the wall in lipstick:

“For heavens

Sake catch me

Before I kill more

I cannot control myself.”

In early 1946 a 6-year-old was discovered missing police officers found a ransom note ‘GeI $20,000 Reddy & wAITe foR WoRd. do NoT NoTify FBI oR Police. Bills IN 5's & 10's. BuRN This FoR heR SAfTY.’ The Chicago mayor also received a note: ‘This is to tell you how sorry I am not to not get ole Degnan instead of his girl. Roosevelt and the OPA made their own laws. Why shouldn't I and a lot more?’ Acting on an anonymous tip, police discovered the girl’s head in a sewer, her right leg in a catch basin, her torso in a drain and her left leg in a different drain. Her arms were later found in another sewer and blood was found in the drains of laundry tubs of a nearby apartment.

On 26th July 1946, 17-year-old Heirens was arrested for attempted burglary when attempting to flee, he was later convicted of the murders and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, although all parole attempts were unsuccessful.

At the time of his death from complications with diabetes, Heirens was Chicago’s longest-serving prison, he had spent 65 years in prison.
