10 favourite characters
An embarrassingly long time ago, I was tagged in those “10 favourite character memes”...
In my defence, I find it very hard to make these lists, because as soon as I get to ten I think of just one more person I could add. I also have problems with the definition of “favourite,” for the purposes of these lists: does it mean a character I love, am fascinated by, want to be or want to be with? 🤔
But enough navel gazing, here are the lists!
10 favourite female characters (tagged by @anghraine)
In roughly reverse order of when I discovered them:
Jyn Erso (Rogue One movie)
Maeve Millay (Westworld tv)
Rey Skywalker Palpatine Nobody (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy)
Leslie Knope (Parks and Rec tv)
Chrisjen Avarasarala (The Expanse books/tv)
Dana Scully (The X-Files tv)
Anne Elliott (Persuasion by Jane Austen)
Éowyn (The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Tenar of Atuan (the Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin)
Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (DC comics, though I discovered her thanks to the Lynda Carter TV series)
Honourable mentions/last-round cuts: Eleanor Shellstrop, Jessica Jones, Lirael
…I seem to have two pretty distinct types, don’t I? Though I’d say the commonality between all of them is stubborn determination—none of these women are about to let anyone tell them what to do, at least when it comes to important things.
10 favourite male characters (tagged by @starxdust22)
This list was even harder! I had trouble getting to ten, perhaps because I enjoy a lot of male characters as eye candy or potential love interests, but far fewer of them can hold my interest on their own without a female character to interact with. Of course, several of these are very closely tied to a favourite female character.
Chidi Anagonye (The Good Place tv)
Cassian Andor (Rogue One movie)
Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy)
Ben Wyatt (Parks and Rec tv)
Jaime Lannister (Game of Thrones tv, not sure whether the book version will catch up to him)
Jason Bourne (movie version, I find Ludlum’s books boring)
Thomas Boniface (obscure characters for the win! if you know who this is, raise your hand)
Faramir (The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Frodo (The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Sparrowhawk/Ged (the Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin)
Again, a pretty clear divide between assholes, or at least morally compromised people, and Lawful Good types.
It’s also interesting (to me, at least) that only a few of these are characters I’ve written. I think that in order to write a character, I need some kind of “hook” into them, the sense that I can understand them on some level, and the characters I love most don’t always have those hooks.

rules: tell us one favorite character from ten shows and tag ten people
I was tagged by @enthusiasmgirl. (I have memety-ask-thing to get to, but this one requires less thought!)
These are some of my favorites, given how bad I am at choosing THE favorite. In no order at all:
Garnet (Steven Universe)
Rosa. No, Terry. No, Captain Holt. Dammit, I’m already cheating?! (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
I haven’t even started season 2 yet but I’m pretty sure Bobbie Draper (The Expanse)
April Ludgate or Ron Swanson (Parks & Rec)
Martha Jones or the Third Doctor or the Tenth Doctor or the Fifth Doctor (Doctor Who)
Marceline (Adventure Time)
Parker, Eliot, Hardison (Leverage)
Giles, Tara (Buffy)
Abby (Sleepy Hollow P S FUCK YOU SLEEPY HOLLOW)
H. G. (Warehouse 13)
Bonus: for 100% prurient reasons, Seven of Nine (ST:TNG, which I just watched last year)

Ten fictional women
@jenniferjuni-per tagged me a long, looong time ago but I'm just now wrapping my head around this...
Rules: List ten of your favorite female characters in ten different fandoms and then tag ten people.
Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter) - little me’s very first superhero. I didn’t care how impractical the costume was, I loved her.
Leia Organa - my second hero, I worshipped her from the moment I saw Empire Strikes Back in the theatre.
Emily of New Moon - Anne Shirley too, but Emily’s longing for something more and her love of writing spoke to me.
Cheating and picking two from one fandom: Eowyn, and then
Arwen - I love them both now, although Arwen’s quieter nature didn't appeal to me until I re-read LOTR.
Morgaine (from C.J. Cherryh's Morgaine series) - a ruthless hero who desperately tries to suppress their honourable side will always be my jam, 100 times more so if it’s a woman.
Ripley - the third and fourth movies never happened, okay? She’s still out there with Hicks & Newt.
Dana Scully - a lot of this has to do with Gillian Anderson’s presence, and how being physically small doesn’t affect her steely strength & will.
Elinor Dashwood - can a character written by someone else 200 years ago be a self-insert? If so, Elinor would be mine.
Jessica Jones - see #6
I'm running out of people to tag, so I'll do five and call it a day: @glorious-spoon@runakvaed @yavieriel @sleepykalena and @firefeufuego
