Something I was turned on to is shampoo and conditioner bars. They are tricky to get the hang of but once you master it, worth it. They last for months. So instead of buying minis or full size bottles and risking explosions or having them take up space, these little bars rock. You can also get hand soap, face bars, dog shampoo. There are little compostable boxes that you can buy and keep your soap in so they don’t get smooshed. Two or three bars per little box is about 2 inches wide, 2.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches long. So for the size of your fist, you have shampoo, conditioners and maybe more. Ethique is the best company in my opinion. They have plastic free packaging(all biodegradable) don’t use palm oil, because they are concentrated there is no excess water, no chlorine, carbon neutral company, fair trade ingredients, vegan, cruelty free and they donate 20% to charity. The list goes on. What more could you want?
Reusable dishes-this one seems difficult and weird but trust me. It’s awesome. I have a two person set of origami plates, bowls and cups. Plus an actual metal spoon, butter knife and fork so I always have to check my bag. No one likes waste or litterers. Bring reusable. My set is origami which means you have to fold it up to form the dish before using it. So the two plates form the package they get carried in. One plate on bottom, everything flatten out and sandwiched between the second plate. The plates snap together and hold everything inside. Total size? Less then 1/2 inch thick and 8 x 8 inch squares. So they tuck right in the back pocket of my bag and take up almost no room. There are several variations you can buy now, even collapsible cups and bowls made of silicone.
Foot wear according to activities. Bring hiking boots if you think you’ll need them and wool socks to wear in them. Flip flops if the weather suits it. Ballet flats or something similar you can wear casually. A regular pair of sneakers for every day use. You don’t want 6 pairs of shoes. They are bulky and take up precious souvenir space. So pack accordingly.
Another thing I recommend people when flying, is a carry on. Keep your passport, wallet any cell phone and charger, a book, an extra change of clothes for after the flight right next to you the whole time. Maybe throw in some head phones, reusable water bottle, collapsible is best. Get some good snacks too!
