Hold Me Through the Night

A cry awoke Sokka. It was a cry so soft and fragile, he almost thought he dreamt it. Half awake and bleary eyed he scanned the darkened chamber for the source of the noise. Nothing. Maybe it was from a dream afterall. Heavy lids dragging shut, he sank back into his pillows, drifting back to sleep.
Except the cry came again. Still soft, barely loud enough to be heard. But it was pleading. The desperation and fear that saturated the noise was too much for Sokka to ignore.
Sokka’s eyes snapped open, his senses on high alert. His eyes were adjusting to the dark painfully slowly. Rarely did he envy being a bender, most days he felt he was better off not being one, but in moments like this he couldn’t help but find it would be convenient. To snap his fingers and illuminate the room in a soft glow the way Aang and Zuko could.
But Sokka wasn’t a trained warrior for nothing. Once his senses adjusted, he was just as capable as the others. If not more so, as he wasn’t hindered by any bending dependencies or limitations. He slowed his breathing, assessing his surroundings. No peculiar shadows or foreign noises. Just the sound of Zuko’s breathing. Strained. Tense.
Sokka peered at the man curled up beside him. Zuko’s back was to him, his head tucked into his arms. There was a wince followed by a muffled whimper.
“N-no, don’t-” Zuko’s voice was small and childlike. Sokka felt sick to his stomach.
“Zuko,” he whispered. When that wasn’t enough, he leaned forward, his lips drawing close to his partner’s ear and whispering once more, “Zuko?” The whimpering quieted. For a moment, Sokka wondered if he was secretly awake and trying to feign sleep. But that wasn’t like Zuko. He hated anyone seeing his weaknesses, even Sokka despite them being together for years at this point. He was more likely to leave in the middle of the night and meander around the palace gardens, alone in the night, before potentially revealing such a scene to Sokka.
“I’m sorry,” Zuko mumbled. Sokka froze, his breath catching in his chest. His heart ached. “Forgive me, I’m sorry. Please.”
It was the “please” that broke the spell. He jolted into motion, closing the gap between him and his partner, his arms wrapping around Zuko and pulling him in so that they laid face to face.
“Shh,” he soothed, pressing a kiss against the man’s brow. Sweat made Zuko’s shaggy bangs stick to his forehead. He looked just like the lost and uncertain teen he was when he joined the gang all those years ago. Fear and anxiety making him look young again. He whimpered again, his expression pinching as his lips trembled. Sokka gave a gentle squeeze, kissing his forehead once more. “You’re okay now. It’s all okay now. Nothing is going to hurt you now. Not while I’m around.” A memory, long since forgotten, arose as he held Zuko close. One of Sokka’s mother holding him after he had a nightmare as a child. She comforted him in a similar fashion, her hand rubbing his back in soothing circles, easing his fears and lulling him to sleep.
Sokka didn’t realize he was doing the same until he felt Zuko’s body shudder against his. The pain on his face eased, his brows relaxing and his pinched lips parting with a contented sigh. Zuko shifted, his head settling into the crook of Sokka’s neck. He felt Zuko inhale deeply and then exhale. Felt the tension in his body unravel as he did so, sinking deeper into Sokka’s embrace.
“Sweet dreams,” Sokka whispered, pressing one last kiss to the edge of Zuko’s scar. Content now, his lover sleeping peacefully in his arms, Sokka drifted back to sleep.
