Ricepaper cover art. Sun Wah Centre. Sept 28, 2019.
Last year, I found out about the Asian Writers Workshop as well as #LiterASIAN. Despite being interested in local events and really loving books, I simply was not aware. Discovering both opened up a whole new world for me. I learned about the many marriages between First Nations and Chinese. I heard stories about the challenging lives that Chinese immigrants were forced to endure. I learned about the sad tragic end to the lives of many. The struggles to make a life in a foreign country, the racism and difficulties with language and earning a living. At LiterASIAN I had the fortune of meeting so many Asian authors who have enriched our lives with their stories. It was an event that I will go to yearly and we are so lucky to have it in our own backyard. But it was my meeting of the co-founder of the Asian Writers Workshop, author, poet, historian, publisher of Ricepaper Magazine, and foodie Jim Wong-Chu that had the most impact on me. I knew that whenever I got to see him I would get a story about a restaurant he wanted to check out. He would describe the dish he wanted to eat in great detail. Another time it would be an author that he was excited about. His great love of Chinatown and talking about the restaurants that are long gone such as Bamboo Terrace and Marco Polo, always made me happy. It is a piece of history and also memories of my childhood going to Chinatown with my mom. When I became a parent I made sure to take both my sons to Chinatown with me. Jim's stories are always peppered with anecdotes, humor and at times gruffness. Thank you so much Jim for giving us the #acww and LiterASIAN. Here are just some of my treasures from LiterASIAN 2016. Better clear off a shelf for this year's books.
