“Rory-” His confused voice echoes after another few moments of silence, “It’s one am.”
She glances distantly at the flickering lamplight on the main road.
“I know.”
“You should be asleep right now.”
“I know.”
The silence reclaims them both. She waits for another flicker of the lamppost like it’s a fated signal. When the hazy yellow shifts just slightly, her voice tumbles free-“I’m out front.”
The only sound is the slight wind against her back and the crunch of her shifting feet. Her stomach clenches at the silence. Her heart beats so furiously beneath her coat that she half wonders if she’s old enough for it to give out.
“Hang on.” His voice sighs as the line clicks dead.
