I have been passing kidney stones for more than 3 decades. I have a birth defect of my kidneys that makes them form stones. Two different urologists have said it’s the worst they’ve ever seen.
“They” can do a lithotripsy. The recovery is like hell for 2 weeks. Then I don’t pass stones (or only tiny shards) for about 2 years. From there on out, I pass larger and larger stones (as they’ve been in there longer).
Last year I passed 48 stones in 49 days. There were 8 larger than 5mm, and the largest was 10mm. This year in April and May I suffered for 5 weeks and passed 14 stones in 2 days, which one was 10mm. Then in June I had an 18-day bout which produced 3, 8mm stones all at once.
The problem with lithotripsy is that currently I have 100% function of my kidneys despite the stones. But lithotripsy can only be done about 5 times, before all the laser ing produces scar tissue in the kidneys and then can never be done again.
And of course I’ve been told that “kidney stones don’t hamper your ability to work” so disability would be OUT, even if we currently didn’t make enough money to disqualify me - but you’d be surprised at how low that figure is.
My friend has a severely disabled son, and they told her if she makes more than $400 a month, they will take away his SS Disability, Medicaid, and EBT. Then TN decided that diabetes (which he also has) is not Medicaid-eligible. So now on basically zero income, she has to come up with 2, $700 vials of insulin for him every month.
Our medical “care” in this country SUCKS. Something needs to break.
