When the wifi goes down, there's always books
an evening of TV nostalgia
The kitchen is stoned, topped with slippery songs buffeting the windows at volume twelve. Tom Lankard, bellwether in bell-bottoms, stalks the room with thin lips buoyant with beer. The girl with the red naval piercing, complete in velveteen, sways her insecure hips by the food lockers. Shadow lay between her fingers, between her little square feet and hands and across her cheek. The other girls, piled on the bent cuff of the table, have their feet in the discard of bottle-caps. The fan cut up the light that pirouetted between spirits, agitating it so it was carried on their nervous halter-necked skin. The kids begin to shed inhibitions and some clothes. The room, divided only by wafer-thin partition walls, you watch two girls gargle Pepsi in the corridor. One glares as if you’ve found her doing something desperately private and dirty. By twelve the room lilts. The metal counters are boiled to iridescence, like the interior of a fine spaceship. The kid with a rock in his gait and the spotty velveteen sink into the alcove by the fridge and the rest dissipate, flocking to find something louder.
