Celebrating Zappadan with another of 2016′s new archival releases. Little Dots is the 10-years-long-awaited sequel to Imaginary Diseases, featuring more performances from the 10-person “Petit Wazoo” tour of late 1972, mixed and edited by FZ in the mid-70s but unreleased ‘til now. Among the five tracks in 71 minutes exists the new earliest released version of “Cosmik Debris” (debuted on this tour), “Little Dots” (unreleased and only played on this tour, 98% of which is jamming/solos with a brief written theme that appears at the beginning and end, in the great jazz tradition), a finally complete version of “Rollo” (in three movements), more jamming from one of the Kansas City concerts, and 25 minutes of improvisations from a show in Columbia, SC (during which trumpetist Gary Barone and drummer Jim Gordon were being held for drug possession; FZ drafted opening act Tim Buckley’s drummer Maury Baker and the band delivered a mostly improvised show under FZ’s direction.) It’s kind of too bad that Zappa either never saw fit or wasn’t able to get around to releasing any of these fabled Petit Wazoo recordings whilst alive, but I’m glad there’s now over two hours of it on CD (more in the future would be welcome, too, but that sort of goes without saying.)
