As we huddle together, the storm raging outside
Noya burrowed deeper into the blanket as Asahi finished securing the door and windows. The little cabin they’d found had been a godsend. The snowstorm had been sudden and they hadn’t been prepared. He just hoped that whoever owned the cabin wasn’t back anytime soon.
There had been a few provisions in the tiny kitchen cabinets. Mostly canned foods and a tin of tea leaves. None of the utilities worked so they’d had to rely on the fireplace. Luckily Asahi knew how to build a fire and had gotten one going. Noya had located several blankets, and a mattress in the bedroom. They’d moved the mattress out to the living room and put it in front of the fireplace where Asahi heated some water to make tea in a kettle he’d found in one of the cupboards.
So now, Noya was seated between Asahi’s legs and pressed against his chest while they cocooned themselves in blankets, atop the mattress. Noya cradled the cup of tea in his hands and sighed.
“Some vacation, huh?” he said. Asahi chuckled.
“Yeah, some vacation. Snowed in someone else’s cabin as we huddle for warmth,” Asahi said.
“Yeah, we could be separated. I’d rather be here with you, than alone,” Noya said. Asahi set their now empty mugs aside and quickly tended to the fire to keep it going. He returned to their fortress of blankets. Their parkas had already dried off in front of the fire, and they bundled them up to use as pillows.
They curled up together, a tangle of limbs. Noya buried his cold nose into Asahi’s neck and laughed as his yelp. Once they were settled Asahi let out a deep sigh.
“I love you,” he said quietly. Noya hummed as he tried off to sleep.
“I love you too,” he responded. They slowly fell asleep to the sound of the crackling fire and the wind whistling through the trees.
