I am enchanted by your writing and analysis, I check this blog at least once a day, and I consider myself a lifelong disney fan. With the new malificent movie being kind of gay and angelina jolie borderline admitted it, Elsa being single, ect. some of the things they've been doing lately have been a more "modern" in the sense that you discuss here. I know Disney owns ABC but doesn't OUAT merely have the rights to some of their characters? Its odd to me that OUAT is afraid to take more risks.

Now as for your thoughts, it’s all contradictions all around, no? Disney is looking like the more ‘progressive’ of the two beasts and yet they’re the bosses. So they can do what they want. No, that’s not it. What’s up are poorly executed fanfiction attempts by the Golden Boys (the animated story that got famous for ‘happy ending’ NOT being a ‘wedding’, they started with wedding planning—what’s wrong with that picture?) as it seems. Still, that being said, Jolie in all of her Queer-Awesomeness can declare whatever she likes about Maleficent, but it’s still subtext, right? Which is important but hey, aren’t folks tired of Lesbian, Bi and Trans women’s stories becoming the subtext thing that NEVER HAPPENS unless someone dies? Trish Bendix wrote this (LINK) though the title obviously could have been “please stop killing us, maiming us, attacking us, accusing us of being mean when we’re not, desexualizing us, oversexualizing us, and giving us baby-plotlines not because mothering is a sacred and underpaid activity but because you know it’ll make us boring to the average viewer.” Even the straightest among us can yawn and cringe at the stupidity of it all.

So Maleficent and Frozen were pretty nifty, if you think that answering to feminist scholars some 2-5 decades after they challenged you to do better for girls and women and then burying queerness in subtext and at least ignoring the princely bullshit IS ‘pretty nifty’ but still, not that much distance separates corporate from their underlings. Shonda on the other hand makes ABC a LOT of money because she’s really good, but she still had an odd, odd idea to bust up her prized les/bi pairing for most of an entire season right after they got same-sex married. And people in the comments sections on stories about Grey’s were really, really adamant that Callie ‘go back to men’ which is stupid yes, but also proof that ABC and Megladon!Disney have mandates that thinking humans should not approve of—to please the lowest common consumerist denominator in their audience.

Soooo, are things getting more ‘modern’? Sure. But it's still a loooong, loooooooooong steep uphill struggle ahead. No?
