Film Review: LIVE BY NIGHT 

Oscar winner Ben Affleck (Argo) directed, produced and stars in the dramatic crime thriller LIVE BY NIGHT. Affleck also wrote the screenplay, based on the award-winning bestseller by Dennis Lehane; it marks the second collaboration for the Boston natives, following the acclaimed drama Gone Baby Gone.

Set after the end of War World I, Joe Coughlin (Affleck) returns to his hometown of Boston during the height of the Prohibition era. Determined never to live by anyone else’s rules again, the war veteran chooses a life of crime, despite his high-ranking cop father. Initially, Affleck’s anti-hero character becomes an independent outlaw robbing banks in Boston. Then, after a stint in prison, and looking for revenge, he relocates to Tampa, Florida to be a bootlegger for an Italian mobster.  

Live By Night has a lot of drama. Perhaps, too much for one movie. Or, you could say, you are getting two for the price of one. Two historical settings, two love stories, two warring crime gangs.

Plus Cubans, the KKK, the end of Prohibition against alcohol and the coming rise of Adolf Hitler. In this, LIVE BY NIGHT, so eerily reflects how history repeats itself. Or, how “two steps forward, one step back’’ have led to our 21st century societal issues with immigration, the Alt-Right, and legalization of cannabis, to name a few.

When it seems the two hour movie is about to get its Hollywood ending, then, incredibly, Live By Night continues on.

Also starring with Affleck are Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Oscar winner Chris Cooper.

LIVE BY NIGHT was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson under the Appian Way banner; and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Todd for Pearl Street Films. Chris Brigham, Dennis Lehane and Chay Carter served as executive producers. Worldwide distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Rated R; for strong violence, language throughout, and some sexuality/nudity.
