James McBride opens LIVE from the NYPL's Spring 2014 season with an exploration of his latest work The Good Lord Bird - winner of the 2013 National Book Award for fiction - through words and music.
James McBride won The National Book Award for Fiction for his book The Good Lord Bird. LIVE from the NYPL is thrilled to announce that McBride, joined by his quintet named after the novel, will take the stage on January 24 to open our Spring 2014 season. The evening will feature conversation with the author and musician, as well as performances by McBride and his band, whose mix of spirituals and jazz renditions of classic gospel songs are inspired by the abolitionist John Brown, a key figure in this novel. Tickets for this event will go on sale to the general public on Monday, November 25 at 10 a.m. Can't wait? LIVE from the NYPL is deeply saddened by the news of Lou Reed's death. He was a true visionary and groundbreaking artist. We are honored to have had him on our stage in recent years, and have no doubt that his conversation at The Morgan Library & Museum on November 5 would have been remarkable.

The room I entered was a dream of this room. Surely all those feet on the sofa were mine. The oval portrait of a dog was me at an early age. Something shimmers, something is hushed up. We had macaroni for lunch every day except Sunday, when a small quail was induced to be served to us. Why do I tell you these things? You are not even here.
