As much as we care to help those we love we cannot fix people. When someone trusts us to share something personal the best we can do is to listen without interruption and try to understand what they are feeling. A great response after listening to someone is to reflect back to them what you heard. For example, “I heard you say school is challenging and that you feel overwhelmed.” This gives the sharer the opportunity to feel heard and correct the listener, if need be, to ensure they understand. Often we hear what we want to hear rather than what the person is trying to say. It isn’t something we have learned to practice. It can feel awkward to do so, but unsolicited advise can feel dismissive and assumes they are broken in some way and need to be fixed. Simply put, people who share want to be heard. Honored to come back to Bret Harte and Vallecito High Schools as a volunteer visitor where me, my son, and siblings went to school and bring mindfulness training to students to help them learn tools they can use to become more self-aware and able to self-regulate in honor of our beautiful boy “Goose”. Driving up to Calaveras County and back to the Bay Area on the same day reminded me of how I used to drive up to visit my son and how much time we would spend back and forth both ways twice over a weekend visit. I wasn’t always there. I fell short, way short, at times. But, by Grace I am learning to turn regret into motivation that has become inspiration to move forward in my life caring more about myself and others, and doing what I can do do better and be better. Today @monicareneemartin parked our 2015 Mini Cooper S with 100,000 miles on it! We originally bought the four door so it would be easier for @goose_goszulak Every year around his death date we go on a road trip. This year we are headed to LA for Universal Studios, an escape room, and the “Giving Back” Supernatural tour!
