Habitat: Rainforests in New Caledonia.

Length: 6 1/2-8 inches.

Diet: They eat vegetable material as well as fruit and nectar along with the usual gecko diet of insects.

They are very popular in the pet industry because of their docile nature and many color morphs they come in.

They are rarely seen in the wild and were at one point thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered in the 1990s.

They are a nocturnal species that hides in crevices during the day then come out to explore the forest canopy at night.

Their main threat in the wild is an invasive species of the little fire ant. Their numbers are still being assessed so we can have a better idea of their endangerment.

Length: 6-8 in

Diet: small invertebrates such as crickets, ants, ect.

Cool Facts

Males have a bright yellow dewlap while females have smaller bluish gray dewlap.

When they launch themselves they'll flip so that they're head pointed downward.

Its wings are actually elongated ribs, the skin on them is usually brightly colored.

In places where different species inhabit the same place each will have a unique colored dewlap and wings so they can know which species to display to.

Males will control a territory with several females in it. When the females are ready they'll climb down to the ground to lay their eggs in the moist soil.

Habitat: rainforest and mangrove forests in New Guinea.

Length: 2 1/2-3 ft

Diet: feeds mainly on bush crickets, mollusks, stick insects, rodents, frogs, and other lizards.

Cool Facts

They are an arboreal species that use their long whiplike tail to lash out at predators.

Females will lay a small clutch of eggs in arboreal termite nests where they are protected from predators and kept at the right temperature. The young monitors will eat adult and larval termites when they hatch.

They take around 2-3 years to reach sexual maturity.

They are diurnal and common in the pet industry.
